Israel set to launch Gaza City offensive: High stakes, high costs ahead
On Saturday, Israeli tanks and troops began maneuvering ever closer to Gaza City’s outskirts in preparation for a full-scale offensive. Eyewitness accounts reported intensified shelling as Israel is moving toward what could be the defining battle of its war against Hamas terrorists: the capture of Gaza City.
Israel’s security cabinet approved the operation, known as Gideon’s Chariots B, and has deployed up to five IDF divisions toward the city’s outskirts—a highly significant mobilization. Thousands of reservists—some 60,000—have been called up.

UN officially declares famine in Gaza, Netanyahu slams ‘lie’
The IPC report says ‘over half a million people in the Gaza Strip are facing catastrophic conditions characterized by starvation, destitution and death.’ Benjamin Netanyahu dismissed the findings, saying that ‘Israel does not have a policy of starvation.’
The United Nations officially declared a famine in Gaza on Friday, August 22, blaming “systematic obstruction” of aid by Israel during more than 22 months of war. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu swiftly dismissed the findings and rejected the UN-backed report as “an outright lie.”
The Rome-based Integrated Food Security Phase Classification Initiative (IPC) said famine was affecting 500,000 people in the Gaza governorate, which covers about a fifth of the Palestinian territory, including Gaza City. The IPC projected that the famine would expand to Deir el-Balah and Khan Yunis governorates by the end of September, covering around two-thirds of Gaza.

The Food and Drug Administration on Friday started to publicly report adverse events to drugs and some vaccines in real time, a change FDA Commissioner Dr. Marty Makary said promotes “radical transparency.”
The FDA Adverse Event Reporting System, known as FAERS, is what the FDA uses as its primary database for collecting adverse event reports related to medication errors, prescription drugs, and some vaccines — though the main database for vaccine adverse event reports is known as VAERS. The reports are collected from health care professionals, manufacturers, and consumers.

An analysis by C-Fam researchers reveals that the UN Children’s agency (UNICEF) spends hundreds of millions of dollars promoting explicit, even pornographic, sexual content for children around the world.
UNICEF is the agency that, a few years ago, produced a study, since withdrawn, that purported to show pornography is helpful for children.
C-Fam’s analysis— “UNICEF: Attack on the World’s Children — examines dozens of programs from Ukraine to Thailand. Despite the claim by UNICEF that it only provides “age-appropriate” material, the uncovered material demonstrates that UNICEF encourages children to question their sexuality, embrace a non-binary understanding of gender, and exposes them to information on sexual pleasure, including masturbation, foreplay, and sexual fantasies.

Study: Abortion Doubles Women’s Risk Of Psychiatric Hospitalization
A recent study of women in Quebec, Canada, published in the Journal of Psychiatric Research revealed that those who chose induced abortion were more than twice as likely to be hospitalized for a mental health problem than women who gave birth.
Researchers found that, per 10,000 person-years, 104 women who had an abortion were hospitalized for mental health problems such as psychiatric disorders, substance abuse, and suicide attempts, versus 42 women who did not have abortions. A person-year (think man-hour) represents the number of people studied over the course of a year. As a whole, the study followed more than 1.2 million pregnancies for up to 17 years after either an abortion or birth.

Nigeria Church official calls for justice in 2022 Pentecost Sunday attack
The national director of the Pontifical Mission Societies in Nigeria, Father Solomon Zaku, has called on the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu-led government to ensure justice is applied in the trial of the suspects linked to the 2022 Pentecost Sunday attack on St. Francis Xavier Owo Catholic Parish in the Ondo Diocese, which claimed at least 50 lives.
Speaking to ACI Africa, CNA’s news partner in Africa, on Aug. 21 after the arraignment of five suspects by the Federal High Court in Abuja, Zaku cautioned against granting bail to the accused, warning that such a move would “deepen the pain of victims’ families” and weaken confidence in Nigeria’s justice system.

Meet the saints of Southern Arabia’s new calendar
The Apostolic Vicariate of Southern Arabia announced Monday the Vatican’s formal approval of its new patron saints and liturgical calendar.
The vicariate announced Aug. 19 that the Dicastery for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments had approved designating Saint Peter, Saint Paul, and Our Lady of Arabia as patron saints of the region.
The vicariate, which is of the Latin rite, covers the United Arab Emirates, Yemen, and Oman, and has 69 priests serving more than one million Catholics in 16 parishes, many of them members of large immigrant communities from the Philippines, India, and Sri Lanka.

Pius X [… combatted] the heresy of “modernism” in his 1907 encyclical Pascendi Dominici Gregis. This heresy, he taught, was the pervasion of “false philosophy” within the Catholic laity and clergy, even within the Catholic university system and the seminaries that threatens the foundations of the faith itself. …
Modernism, Pius explained, is essentially a form of agnosticism within the Church.

Cardinal Burke meets with Pope Leo in private audience at the Vatican
Pope Leo XIV received Cardinal Raymond Burke in an audience in Rome Aug. 22, according to the Holy See Press Office.
The press office did not state what was discussed as it will usually only disclose such information if the Pope’s meeting is with a head of state. Pope Leo received several other clergy in audience the morning of Aug. 22, according to the press office.
Cardinal Burke had already communicated with Pope Leo on at least one occasion. In June, the cardinal shared that he expressed to Pope Leo his hope that the Pontiff would restore more access to the Traditional Latin Mass.
