Clergy and Christian families remain in Gaza Church compounds as Israeli offensive escalates
Christian clergy and nuns said Aug. 26 they will remain inside church compounds in Gaza City despite a major Israeli offensive advancing into the area, even as thousands of other residents flee westward toward the coast.
In statements from the Greek Orthodox and Latin Patriarchates’ leaders reported by the Times of Israel, priests, nuns, and lay families are sheltering in the compounds of Saint Porphyrius (Orthodox) and Holy Family Church (Catholic). They stressed their refusal to evacuate, citing responsibility for the elderly, disabled, women, and children who are unable to move.

Pope Leo again calls for end to War in Gaza, joins Jerusalem Patriarchs’ call for peace
The Latin and Greek Orthodox Patriarchs of Jerusalem released a joint appeal for peace in Gaza on Tuesday, August 26, saying there is no reason to justify “the deliberate and forcible mass displacement of civilians.”
On Wednesday, Pope Leo XIV joined his voice to theirs, and recalled the Day of Prayer and Fasting for Peace, which took place on Friday, August 22.
“Today I renew a strong appeal both to the parties involved and to the international community, that an end be put to the conflict in the Holy Land, which has caused so much terror, destruction, and death,” said the Pope.

Kennedy confirms HHS is on track to reveal causes of autism in September
Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., on Tuesday confirmed to President Donald Trump that his department is still on track to publish information identifying “interventions” that are contributing to a rise in autism.
Kennedy first announced a joint research effort to find the root causes of autism in April as part of the Trump administration’s “Make America Healthy Again” mission. One-in-36 children have autism spectrum disorder, according to a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report in 2020.

For Media Hypocrites, Burning The US Flag Is Speech But Touching The Rainbow One Is ‘Hate’
On Monday, President Donald Trump signed an executive order instructing federal agencies to use existing laws to prosecute American flag desecration.
The order instructs agencies to “prioritize the enforcement to the fullest extent possible of our Nation’s criminal and civil laws against acts of American Flag desecration that violate applicable, content-neutral laws, while causing harm unrelated to expression, consistent with the First Amendment.”
To be clear, the order does not make flag burning itself illegal. It makes no new laws.
Nonetheless, both the left and the right have rushed to frame this as an attack on free speech and the First Amendment.

Trump’s HHS Gives States 60 Days to Remove ‘Gender Ideology’ in School Material
President Donald Trump’s Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) warned states and American territories that they must remove references to “gender ideology” from K–12 education materials or they will lose federal funding.
HHS sent letters dated Aug. 26 to 40 states and Washington, D.C., as well as five territories, that say any state or territory that fails to end the promotion of gender ideology in its implementation of the Personal Responsibility Education Program (PREP) within the next 60 days will lose federal PREP funding.

Miami’s Catholic archbishop and a Trump-hating billionaire have joined forces to prevent illegal aliens in Miami from being deported. This is taking place in the very city reporting the most arrests of illegals since President Donald Trump’s second inauguration in January.
Archbishop Thomas Wenski, who celebrated the first Mass for detainees at “Alligator Alcatraz,” the new immigrant detention center in the Florida Everglades, is receiving funding from Cuban-born billionaire Miguel B. Fernández and other wealthy locals, Bloomberg reported on August 19.

Florida to Use Truck Weigh Stations as Immigration Checkpoints
Florida officials announced that under a new immigration enforcement program, truck weigh stations in the state will be used as U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) checkpoints.
During a press conference announcing the program on Monday, Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier referenced a recent fatal accident in which three people were killed after Harjinder Singh, 28, a semi-truck driver, allegedly made an illegal U-turn in Florida.
“Most people in Florida are now aware of the serious tragedy that happened down in southeast Florida,” Uthmeier said. “Someone that never should have been given a driver’s license, much less a CDL license to drive larger commercial vehicles, engaged in reckless behavior that took three lives.”

Federal judge rejects Milwaukee judge’s immunity claim in ICE obstruction case
A U.S. District judge on Tuesday rejected Milwaukee County Judge Hannah Dugan’s request to dismiss allegations that she helped an undocumented immigrant evade federal authorities earlier this year.
Dugan was arrested in April after allegedly helping Eduardo Flores-Ruiz avoid plainclothes Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents who were trying to serve him a warrant.
Her attorneys argued she is entitled to judicial immunity for her official acts. They also said the federal government overstepped its authority by arresting and charging her.

Video Shows Virginia Gubernatorial Candidate Allegedly Endorsing Assisted Suicide
A Democratic gubernatorial candidate from Virginia appears to endorse assisted suicide and favors requiring religious hospitals to perform it.
A 2018 video shows then U.S. House candidate Abigail Spanberger being asked about her position on “legislation that would legalize medical aid in dying,” a common code phrase for assisted suicide, according to the Catholic News Agency (CNA).
“I support and I would support legislation that legalizes the right to die with dignity of a person’s choosing,” Spanberger replied. “That would include allowing for medical providers to provide prescriptions for life-ending prescriptions.”

New Poll Shows Winsome Sears Catching Up, Can Win Virginia Governor’s Race
A new poll is signaling that Lt. Gov. Winsome Earle-Sears is closing in on her Democrat opponent in the Virginia governor race.
The Roanoke College poll showed Democrat gubernatorial candidate Abigail Spanberger leading Earle-Sears 46% to 39% in the category of likely Virginia voters. That is a significant diminishment from May where Spanberger was leading by 43% compared to Earle-Sears’s 26%.

By now you might have seen a video clip circulating on social media of a defiant and terrified young Scottish girl wielding a knife and a hatchet to fend off the advances of a migrant man who allegedly had been harassing her and her younger sister. You can hear the fear and anger in their voices, a mix of desperation and rage and confusion. You can also hear the man’s voice, taunting them. At one point one of the girls cries out, “Don’t touch my little sister, she’s only twelve!”
You might also have heard how the story ended: the police arrested the girl for possession of a bladed weapon. They didn’t detain or even investigate the migrant man.

Conducted by the Center for Applied Research in the Apostolate (CARA) in collaboration with the Diocese of Saginaw, the study drew responses from more than a thousand clerics and major superiors, revealing patterns of faith that stretch from childhood catechesis to the lived reality of ecclesial ministry.
The numbers tell a clear story. Nearly nine in ten respondents describe a living devotion to Mary, most often expressed through the rosary, pilgrimages, or the wearing of devotional medals. For many, such practices are not simply private habits but enduring sources of identity and strength in ministry. Over three-quarters reported that Marian devotion has directly fortified them in their vocation.

‘Let there be peace!’: Book of Pope Leo XIV’s discourses to be published Aug. 27
On Aug. 27 the Vatican will publish a compilation of Pope Leo’s discourses from the first months of his pontificate in a book signed by the pontiff titled “Let There Be Peace! Words to the Church and the World.”
According to the Vatican publishing house, the 160-page volume, which will be published in Italian, English, and Spanish, “is a valuable book: It collects the first discourses of Pope Leo XIV, through which we can better understand the pontiff through his own words.”
