Charlotte Man Charged With Federal Crime In Fatal Attack of Iryna Zarutska
A federal criminal complaint was filed in U.S. District Court in Charlotte today, charging a Charlotte man with a federal crime in connection with the fatal attack of Iryna Zarutska on the city’s light rail system, announced Russ Ferguson, U.S. Attorney for the Western District of North Carolina.
Decarlos Dejuan Brown, Jr., 34, is charged with one count of committing an act causing death on a mass transportation system. …
“Iryna Zarutska was a young woman living the American dream — her horrific murder is a direct result of failed soft-on-crime policies that put criminals before innocent people,” said Attorney General Pamela Bondi. “I have directed my attorneys to federally prosecute DeCarlos Brown Jr., a repeat violent offender with a history of violent crime, for murder. We will seek the maximum penalty for this unforgivable act of violence — he will never again see the light of day as a free man.”

Republicans call for judge’s removal after light rail stabbing
North Carolina lawmakers are calling for the removal of a judge who released a man accused of fatally attacking 23-year-old Ukrainian refugee Iryna Zarutska on a Charlotte light rail train, even though the suspect had a long criminal record and a history of mental illness.
One of the lawmakers, Republican Rep. Tim Moore, called the killing in his home state “preventable,” on X. “There must be accountability. North Carolinians deserve better,” he added.
Moore is joined by 10 House Republicans from the state who signed a letter requesting formal proceedings to remove Magistrate Judge Teresa Stokes.

President Donald Trump on Monday rebuked foreign companies with illegal workers after hundreds of employees at a Hyundai Motor car battery facility under construction in Ellabell, Georgia, were detained in a raid by U.S. authorities on Thursday.
“Following the Immigration Enforcement Operation on the Hyundai Battery Plant in Georgia, I am hereby calling on all Foreign Companies investing in the United States to please respect our Nation’s Immigration Laws,” Trump said via his TruthSocial site.

Supreme Court adds Trump’s tariffs case to fall lineup
The Supreme Court on Tuesday agreed to hear President Donald Trump’s tariff case this fall, expediting the case that would determine whether Trump can use emergency powers to place tariffs on many countries.
The Trump administration asked the Supreme Court to take up the case last week and give an expedited ruling on the matter. The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit determined last month that Trump lacked the authority to impose tariffs, but placed the decision on hold to give the administration time to appeal.

His crusade against mandatory vaccinations had dominated the headlines, but don’t lose sight of another campaign by Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.. Last month he proclaimed that under his leadership, HHS “is overhauling the organ-transplant system. We’ve exposed gross negligence, launched sweeping reforms, and will decertify any organization that violates the sanctity of human life.”
Those last few words—“the sanctity of human life”—should command the attention of Catholic Americans. For that matter, so should RFK Jr’s campaign.
The Catechism of the Catholic Church (2296) teaches that organ transplants “can be meritorious” if the donor gives his consent freely and the benefits to the recipient outweigh the danger to the donor. However, the Catechism goes on: “It is morally inadmissible directly to bring about the disabling mutilation or death of a human being, even to delay the death of other persons.” …

A new policy from Seattle Public Schools (SPS) regarding the teaching of an LGBTQ-inclusive curriculum is stirring significant conversation among local families and has made headlines across the nation as of Friday. This policy, implemented in Washington’s largest school district, has come under scrutiny as parents discover that they cannot opt their children out of specific lessons. The Seattle school district asserts that it is merely adhering to state law.
According to state regulations, parents and guardians are permitted to review textbooks and other classroom materials, and they can appeal decisions about instructional content to the district’s instructional materials committee.

North Carolina bishop bans use of altar rails at diocesan high schools
Bishop Michael Martin of Charlotte, North Carolina, has implemented new liturgical guidelines at the three Catholic high schools he oversees that include the removal of altar rails and kneelers during Communion. …
Students will now receive Holy Communion either kneeling without a rail or standing, and must serve as extraordinary ministers during the liturgy. … no official diocesan announcement has been made, with the instructions instead communicated privately to the schools. …
Father Aaron Huber, chaplain at Christ the King Catholic High School in Huntersville, stated in a letter to parents that the changes aim “to enrich our students’ experience of the Mass and to provide them with opportunities to grow as intentional disciples of Jesus Christ.”

Archdiocese of New Orleans offers $230 million to settle abuse claims
After the Archdiocese of New Orleans increased its settlement offer to clergy sexual abuse claimants from $180 million to $230 million on Sept. 8, attorneys of the victims urged their clients to accept the deal.
The archdiocese was able to increase its initial offer, announced in May, after securing a buyer for the $50 million sale of Christopher Homes, a property that has provided affordable housing and assisted living to low-income and senior citizens in the Gulf Coast area for the last 50 years.

Bishop Placidus Pei Ronggui, underground bishop of Luoyang, passed away on Saturday at the age of 91 in China. A Trappist monk originally from Hebei, he was ordained into the priesthood only in 1981, when he was 48, well after the Cultural Revolution. Nevertheless, he was imprisoned several times after 1989, for a total of four years, after he refused to join certain organisations of China’s official Catholic Church, controlled by the Communist Party. …

Boko Haram kills dozens in Nigeria attack
Boko Haram militants killed at least 60 people late Friday in a nighttime assault on a village in northeastern Nigeria, reported The Associated Press.
According to authorities, the village of Darul Jamal in the Bama local government area is home to residents who had recently returned from a camp for internally displaced persons.
In the attack, over a dozen houses were burnt and more than 100 people were forced to flee, revealed the chairman of Bama’s local government, Modu Gujja.

Catholic Slain in Muslim Attack on Pilgrims in Pakistan
Muslims on Sunday (Sept. 7) shot to death one Catholic and wounded another as they traveled to a Marian pilgrimage site in Punjab Province, Pakistan, sources said.
Afzal Masih of Samnabad locality of Lahore in Punjab Province, and his cousin Harris Tariq Masih were among a group of Catholics who were in a passenger van en route to the annual Feast of the Nativity of Mary shrine … said Aurangzeb Peter, a member of the traveling group.
Afzal Masih, sitting in the front seat, asked the assailants to stop harassing the women, and the Muslims stopped the van and pulled him out onto the road, Peter said.
“They started beating him with fists and kicks … ” Peter [said]. One [assailant] opened fire … shooting Afzal Masih [fatally] in the neck and Harris Masih in his right arm.
