Red baseball caps reading “Trump the peace president” filled the Knesset chamber Monday morning as Israeli officials prepared to honor President Donald Trump for his role in securing the release of 20 hostages held by Hamas since October 7, 2023. The MAGA-style hats, distributed by Knesset staff to guests, marked a remarkable moment in international diplomacy where American political symbols merged with celebrations of peace and the protection of innocent life.

Trump arrived at the Israeli parliament building around 11 a.m. local time, just as reports confirmed all 20 hostages had been officially released. The president’s entrance came shortly after Hamas freed the first seven captives, marking the beginning of what many hope will be lasting peace in the region. Israeli officials greeted Trump warmly before he signed the guest book with his signature black Sharpie marker, writing: “This is my great honor — a great and beautiful day. A new beginning.”

The ceremony represents more than diplomatic protocol. Trump is set to receive Israel’s highest civilian award, the medal of honor, recognizing his efforts in negotiating the ceasefire between Israel and Hamas. The symbolism runs deeper than politics, touching fundamental principles that resonate strongly with Catholic teaching about the protection of innocent life and the pursuit of genuine peace.

For Catholics watching these events unfold, the scene in the Knesset reflects core principles about the proper relationship between faith and public life. The Catholic Church has long taught that while the spiritual authority of the Church and temporal authority of the state operate in distinct spheres, they should work together for the moral good of society. As Christ himself taught, we must “give to Caesar what is Caesar’s and to God what is God’s,” but this doesn’t mean faith retreats from public concerns about justice and peace.

The modified MAGA hats declaring Trump “the peace president” capture something significant about moral leadership in international affairs. When political leaders work to free hostages and protect innocent lives, they participate in the kind of governance that Catholic social teaching has always endorsed. Pope St. Pius X wrote in his 1906 encyclical Vehementer Nos that political authority should aid “the conquest of man’s supreme welfare,” including moral and spiritual goods. Securing the freedom of captives and ending violence clearly serves this higher purpose.

Conservative constitutional scholars have long argued that moral law informed by natural law can and should influence civil law. The celebration of diplomatic efforts that save innocent lives exemplifies this principle in action. When political symbols like the adapted MAGA hats appear in foreign parliaments honoring peace efforts, they represent not partisan politics but recognition of moral leadership that transcends party lines.

Trump’s honored reception in the Knesset demonstrates how moral leadership transcends typical political categories. When leaders work to free hostages, negotiate peace, and protect innocent life, they engage in the kind of governance that serves human dignity regardless of partisan affiliation. The adapted MAGA symbolism reflects not political division but recognition of effective moral action on the world stage.

Despite the international political accolades, President Trump reveals a deep and touching humility and spiritual self-examination. En route to Tel Aviv, he told reporters he wasn’t sure he would pass through the Pearly Gates. “I’m not sure I’m gonna be able to make heaven. But I’ve made life better for a lot of people,” referring to the number of lives he has saved by successfully negotiating the peace deal.

The usual suspects ridiculed the president for his remarks, but Catholics with an understanding of the sine quo non virtue of humility defended him. “There’s a lot of people crashing out over Trump’s ‘getting into heaven’ comments. Personally, I’m glad we have a President who is willing to show humility. Humble yourself in the sight of the Lord, and He shall lift you up,” posted Jack Posobiec on X.

For Catholics committed to both faith and civic engagement, these events offer encouragement about the possibility of principled political leadership. The Church teaches that Catholics must vote and act politically according to moral principles, especially regarding the protection of life and the promotion of peace. Leaders who demonstrate these priorities in concrete actions like hostage negotiations deserve recognition and support.

Leaders who in the midst of international acclaim for their political success also demonstrate holy humility deserve recognition and support even more.
