If Republicans cannot pass one of their signature election reforms while holding congressional majorities, voters may wonder what those majorities are for.
In today’s America, you can’t even get a speeding ticket without a photo ID. Granted, you might be thrown in jail if you get caught speeding and forgot your ID; but you will eventually have to prove that you are who you say you are to get out of the hoosgow. Nor will you be able to board an airliner. However, you can vote in most states. To many Americans who voted Republican in the last election, voter ID should be a no-brainer. With a majority — however thin — the gutless Senate Republicans cannot pass one of the president’s most important legislative priorities: the Safeguard America voter ID bill.
It is obvious why the Democrats unanimously oppose Voter ID. After all, a major part of their constituency consists of the dead in Chicago, undocumented aliens, and any derelicts that they can bus from homeless shelters and seedy bars to the polls on election day. But the Voter ID act remains a bridge too far for Republican senators. This is the gang that couldn’t shoot straight. Given the mood of the country today, a continued Republican majority in the House and Senate is by no means assured after November. …

Biden Spent Millions of Tax Dollars on Shockingly Explicit Sex Ed for Minors—How Trump Is Ending It
President Donald Trump’s Department of Health and Human Services on Friday will terminate $67 million of teenage pregnancy prevention grants to defund “sexually explicit” curricula, according to documents obtained exclusively by the Daily Signal.
The Office of the Assistant Secretary of Health’s Office of Population Affairs provides grants to organizations that promote teen pregnancy prevention, as well as organizations that write teen pregnancy prevention curricula. HHS terminated 53 of 67 of the Teen Pregnancy Prevention Program grants after a department review.
The Biden-era HHS awarded organizations that push curricula the Trump administration calls “medically inaccurate,” “age-inappropriate,” and “sexually explicit,” violating the statute that set up the program.
HHS will announce two new award opportunities for potential partners that promote body literacy in place of radical gender ideology, abortion, and contraception. The opportunities will “focus on programs that do not promote material that depicts, describes, exposes, or presents obscene, indecent, or sexually explicit content, including content that normalizes or promotes sexual activity for minors.”

The list of roughly 200 texts takes effect in the 2030-31 school year for elementary students
The Republican-controlled Texas State Board of Education approved a required reading list Friday that includes passages from the Bible, marking the latest effort by conservative officials to expand Christian teachings in public schools.
The Texas State Board of Education voted 9-5, with one abstention, to approve the required reading list for the state’s more than 5 million public school students.
The required reading list includes works such as Charles Dickens’ “Great Expectations” along with passages from the New Testament. …
The required reading list will take effect beginning with the 2030-31 school year for elementary school students.

The Real Avant-Garde vs. The Art of the State – Commentary by Julia James Davis
Every time I go to a museum or gallery, I am always struck by the consistency of themes in the art displayed–it’s always something to do with racism, feminism, environmentalism, or some other ‘who-done-me-wrong-ism’ that is usually connected to either politics or oneself.
For example, I recently saw the ‘Monuments’ exhibit at the Museum of Contemporary Art in L.A. (lead support by the Mellon Foundation), which featured Civil War-era monuments that were torn down or desecrated during the George Floyd Riots. Part of this exhibit was a video installation having to do with black and queer (I think?) identity in the present-day South set to a soundtrack of very loud southern hymns.
A few months later, I went to the Menil Collection in Houston, and what do I see and hear? What appeared to be the very same video with the same type of music! I say “appeared to be” because it is entirely possible that these were two separate works of art, because so much art looks the same everywhere, no matter who made it.
While this particular politically-charged social commentary style of art may have accelerated with George Floyd (which, I think, comes only second to the World Wars in damage to our culture), it actually started much earlier with the cementing of modernism as the official style of the state well over 100 years ago. I am including ‘post-modernism’ when I say ‘Modernism’ because it’s really all the same, no matter how hard the academics try to argue otherwise (Warhol’s silk-screens may be figurative, but they’re even FLATTER than the Abstract Expressionists!).
Why is there such a clear, repetitive agenda serving us pornography, race issues, and kitsch at every important white-wall gallery across the world just as reliably as you can get the same frappé at any Starbucks from China to Alaska? Because while the modernist revolution of art aimed to overthrow the constricting chains of formal academism, all it did was give us the flipside of the same controlling coin, as a new power nexus was formed in the post-War world.
A new structure of governments and corporations (which have almost one and the same agenda), universities, foundations, financial elites, and academics, has coalesced into what is tantamount to a new academic system forbidding true creativity, free thinking, and most importantly of all, beauty, which is their greatest threat. The result is a rote, one-note art scene.
The way out of all this and back to real artistic innovation is to return to what existed before the academic dogmatism of the Academies and the anarchism of Modernism–to return to the Roman Catholic Church. …

Pope Leo prays for Venezuela as quake death toll rises
Pope Leo XIV expresses his solidarity and calls for prayers for the people of Venezuela, as the death toll from two earthquakes rises sharply.
As he prayed the Angelus on Sunday, Pope Leo XIV spoke in Spanish to express his closeness to Venezuela, where two massive earthquakes struck in quick succession this week.
He invited everyone to join him in praying for victims and their families, as well as for the work of rescue crews.
“I wish to express my closeness to the Venezuelan sisters and brothers affected by the recent earthquakes that have caused numerous victims and injured, as well as great material damages,” he said. As we pray to the Lord for the eternal repose of the deceased, I renew my spiritual closeness to their families, the injured, and those struck by this tragedy. At the same time, I express my gratitude and support to those who are generously carrying out search and rescue efforts.”
As he concluded the Extraordinary Consistory of Cardinals on Saturday evening, Pope Leo shared the closeness of all the College of Cardinals with the people of Venezuela.

What Saints Peter and Paul Have to Offer by Thomas Griffin
Boldness and forgiveness are both critical for human flourishing. On June 29, the Catholic Church celebrates two men who embodied these characteristics: Saint Peter and Saint Paul.
They were, arguably, the two most important figures in the early church after Jesus himself. They were responsible for leading the faithful and for bringing about the conversion of the masses across the known world. The Church celebrates them together because they were both martyred in Rome during the same year.
There can be a temptation to write off the experiences of ancient saints, or saints in general, as not applicable for our lives. However, investigating who Peter and Paul were reveals that they were ordinary, flawed men—but men worth learning from. Their lives challenge us to both speak boldly about one’s faith and rely on the mercy of God when we fall.
Peter was a fisherman and one of the first disciples that Jesus called to follow Him. In Peter’s very first encounter with Jesus, we see some of his personality.
Jesus was preaching on the shore as Peter was cleaning his nets after a night’s work. Christ asked to teach from the boat in order for the people on the beach to be able to better hear him. When he concluded his teaching, Jesus commanded Peter to cast his nets into the sea for a catch.
