Christ's Flesh is real food, and His Blood is real drink – but are we hungry for it? Do we go hungry for it? When we approach the altar of the Lord, we should remember we come to participate in a Sacrifice, not merely to eat and drink. The eucharistic fast helps us be aware of that, but gradual changes designed to make frequent reception easier have eroded the understanding of the separate sacredness of the event.
