Deal Reached Advancing Spending Bills to Avert New Govt. Shutdown

A deal was reached Thursday to advance a major package of federal spending bills that would avert a government shutdown for most agencies beginning Saturday, according to a Senate Democrat leadership aide cited by Reuters.

The agreement would split the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) funding bill from the broader package and fund DHS at current levels for roughly two weeks while negotiations continue.

President Donald Trump said Thursday afternoon that he was working hard with Democrats to reach a deal and warned that a shutdown could slow the U.S. economy.

Trump declares national emergency over Cuba’s support for ‘malign actors’

President Donald Trump signed an executive order on Thursday to declare a national emergency over the Cuban regime’s support for “malign actors adverse to the United States.”

The executive order says those actors include Russia, China, Iran, Hamas, and Hezbollah.

“Cuba blatantly hosts dangerous adversaries of the United States, inviting them to base sophisticated military and intelligence capabilities in Cuba that directly threaten the national security of the United States,” the directive reads, citing Russia as a frequent guest of Cuba.

By declaring a national emergency, Trump intends to create a “tariff system” targeting Cuban imports, including oil.

Bishop Chairmen Call on Administration to Extend Protections for Haitians in the United States

“There is simply no realistic opportunity for the safe and orderly return of people to Haiti at this time,” said Bishop Brendan J. Cahill, chairman of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops’ (USCCB) Committee on Migration, together with Bishop A. Elias Zaidan, chairman of the USCCB’s Committee on International Justice and Peace.

The bishops’ statement follows U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem’s decision to terminate Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Haiti, effective February 3, based on a determination the country no longer meets the conditions for the designation. Over 300,000 Haitians in the United States are covered by the current designation.

Notre Dame Affirms Appointment of Abortion Advocate to Prominent Post

Notre Dame’s recent announcement that a scholar who advocates for legal abortion will lead the university’s Asian studies institute is drawing criticism from some members of the faculty, but the university is standing by the appointment.

Susan Ostermann, an associate professor of global affairs at Notre Dame who has described laws banning abortion as “violence,” “sexual abuse” and “trauma” and has linked efforts to end abortion to white supremacy, is set to take over as director of the university’s Liu Institute of Asia and Asian Studies on July 1.

Some of the most pointed criticism of the appointment so far has come from Holy Cross Father Wilson Miscamble, a professor emeritus of history at Notre Dame and former chairman of the department, who published a blistering critique in First Thingson Wednesday.

“If this sad appointment is allowed to stand, the hollowness of the claim that Catholic character informs all Notre Dame’s endeavors will be painfully exposed,” Father Miscamble wrote.
