Vice President JD Vance has spoken out against “the politics of self-hatred and the mass invasion of migrants” in the United Kingdom after the brutal death of student Henry Nowak, the second U.S. intervention on “civilisational decline” in Britain in 24 hours.
British Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer attempted to kick back against the President Donald Trump Administration and American concern for the country’s descent into chaos on Friday night, characterising comments from Washington as political interference and even an attempt to “stir up division on our streets”. Democrat Xavier Becerra advances to general election in race for California governor
Democrat Xavier Becerra advanced to the general election for California governor Friday after pitching himself as an experienced choice to lead the nation’s most populous state and succeed Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom.
Becerra leaned on his more than 35 years in public office, including as state attorney general and U.S. health secretary, to argue that he was the most qualified candidate in a crowded field.
“The people of the great state of California, in the greatest nation on earth, have spoken — loudly and proudly,” Becerra said in a statement. “We are never backing down. November, here we come.”
It was not yet clear who Becerra would face in the general election. His top rivals came down to Republican Steve Hilton, a former Fox News commentator backed by President Donald Trump, and Democrat Tom Steyer, a billionaire climate activist who poured $215 million of his own money into his campaign.

BISHOP OF QUELIMANE, MOZAMBIQUE, SHOT DEAD AT HIS RESIDENCE
The Catholic Church in Mozambique is mourning the death of Bishop Osório Citora Afonso of Quelimane, who was found shot dead at his residence in the early hours of June 6.
“His body was found in a corridor of the episcopal residence,” pontifical charity Aid to the Church in Need said in a June 6 press release. “The perpetrator of the crime remains unknown.”
In a statement sent to ACN, Archbishop Inácio Saúre of Nampula, president of the Mozambique bishops’ conference, said that the prelate was found “lifeless and in strange circumstances that have yet to be clarified,” and appealed for “the serenity of faith and fraternal solidarity” from all in the face of this “sad event.”
Bishop Citora Afonso, a Consolata missionary, was allegedly shot in the chest, near the heart, ACN said.
The news has left the Church in Mozambique “in a state of shock.” Archbishop Saúre said in his statement he received the news “with profound sorrow.”
The president of Mozambique also issued a statement expressing his “deep sorrow and consternation” at the news of the bishop’s death.
President Daniel Chapo described the loss as “irreparable” for Mozambican society and for the Christian community, noting that Bishop Citora Afonso had “distinguished himself throughout his life by his humility, pastoral dedication, and his preaching of the values of peace and reconciliation.”

Who is Funding Fulani Militants Killing Christians in Nigeria?
The Fulani militant campaign is the deadliest source of violence against Christians in the world. Of 36,056 civilian killings across Nigeria between 2019 and 2024, 47 percent were directly linked to Fulani militias, according to the Observatory for Religious Freedom in Africa. In states where attacks occur, Christians were murdered at a rate 5.2 times higher than Muslims relative to population size, with three Christians killed for every Muslim. Fulani militants were responsible for 55 percent of recorded Christian deaths between 2019 and 2023, nearly seven times the number killed by Boko Haram and ISWAP combined.
Kidnapping is also a primary funding mechanism. ORFA documented 29,180 civilians abducted between 2019 and 2024, with individual raids regularly exceeding 100 victims, including 287 students seized in a single attack in Kuriga, Kaduna State in March 2024 and more than 300 taken from St. Mary’s Catholic School in November 2025, the largest school kidnapping on record.
Nigeria’s National Bureau of Statistics found that Nigerians paid $1.42 billion in ransoms from May 2023 to April 2024 alone. Those payments helped finance the next round of attacks while forcing Christian families to liquidate farmland and other assets to secure the release of relatives. Victims and community leaders report that after attacks drove Christians from their villages, Fulani groups often occupied the abandoned land, reinforcing claims that territorial expansion is a key objective of the violence. …

U.S. bishops urge reflection as nation prepares for Sacred Heart consecration
Catholics should “take a moment to reflect on the title ‘Sacred Heart of Jesus’” and what the “special title” truly means, Archbishop Shelton Fabre of Louisville, Kentucky, said.
The U.S. bishops are preparing to consecrate the United States to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and are calling on the faithful to reflect on Christ’s love.
Ahead of the anticipated event, Catholics should “take a moment to reflect on the title ‘Sacred Heart of Jesus’” and what it “truly mean[s],” Archbishop Shelton Fabre of Louisville said in a video message.
“Love and forgiveness are freely given from Jesus’ Sacred Heart, encouraging us all to grow into the best disciples we can be across our country,” Fabre said.
The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) released a link for the faithful to watch the consecration Mass online, which will take place June 11 in Orlando, Florida, during the bishops’ spring meeting.
The consecration coincides with America’s 250th anniversary following the bishops’ decision at their fall meeting to consecrate the U.S.
