Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem urges hope and prayer as ceasefire talks advance
As news emerges of possible breakthroughs in negotiations to end two years of devastating conflict in Gaza, the Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem has issued a pastoral letter urging the faithful to nurture hope, remain steadfast in prayer, and reject the logic of violence and division.
In his message to the diocese, Cardinal Pierbattista Pizzaballa acknowledges the immense suffering caused by the war, while welcoming signs of progress toward a cessation of hostilities, the release of hostages, and the freeing of Palestinian prisoners.
“For the first time, the news is reporting a possible new positive development: the release of Israeli hostages, of some Palestinian prisoners and the cessation of bombing and military offensives. This is an important and long-awaited first step,” he writes.

Top Senate Republican reveals why Democrats are ‘stuck’ as shutdown reaches day five
Senate Majority Leader John Thune, R-S.D., said Sunday that some Democrats are looking for an “off-ramp” from the government shutdown when asked whether he has identified additional more lawmakers who could potentially reopen the government.
“There are conversations ongoing where Democrats, who I think realize this is a losing strategy for them… want to find an off-ramp here and are talking to Republicans,” Thune told “Sunday Morning Futures” host Maria Bartiromo.
The South Dakota Republican went on to say he has had some conversations with Democratic lawmakers but added the party’s leadership is “stuck” because of “left-wing special interest groups.”

Pope denounces ‘coldness of indifference’, ‘stigma of discrimination’ for migrants
Pope Leo XIV celebrated a special Mass for the Jubilee of Missions and of Migrants Sunday, urging a welcoming and unprejudiced attitude toward migrants and indicating that what it means to be a missionary in the modern world is changing.
“Brothers and sisters, today a new missionary age opens up in the history of the Church,” Leo said in his homily for the Oct. 5 Mass.
It is a jubilee celebration that’s especially dear to Pope Leo given his decades of service as a missionary in Peru, and his own involvement in the migration issue during that time.

As undocumented immigrants face policy unleashing ‘fear and terror,’ Catholics should stand in solidarity with them, Cardinal McElroy [Archdiocese of Washington] says
Decrying the federal government’s policy of mass deportation of undocumented immigrants, which he described as a “governmental assault designed to produce fear and terror among millions of men and women,” Washington Cardinal Robert W. McElroy at a Sept. 28 Mass said Jesus’s Parable of the Good Samaritan should guide Catholics’ response in standing in solidarity with those immigrants, regarding them as neighbors just as the Samaritan did to the robbery victim needing help.
In his homily at a Mass at the Cathedral of St. Matthew the Apostle marking the 111th World Day of Migrants and Refugees, Cardinal McElroy said the parable in that day’s gospel reading raises a central question for Catholics to face as citizens and believers, regarding “whether 10 million men and women and children and families who have lived alongside us for decades should face terror and expulsion: Are they our neighbors?”

Judge Holds Emergency Hearing on Trump’s Deployment of California National Guard Troops to Portland – GRANTS MOTION TO BLOCK ALL NEW TROOPS
US District Judge Karin Immergut held an emergency hearing Sunday evening after President Trump circumvented her previous order halting troop deployment to Portland.
Last weekend, President Trump authorized troops to Portland, Oregon, and other Democrat-run cities to protect ICE agents from Antifa terrorists and other radical far-left groups.
“At the request of Secretary of Homeland Security, Kristi Noem, I am directing Secretary of War, Pete Hegseth, to provide all necessary Troops to protect War ravaged Portland, and any of our ICE Facilities under siege from attack by Antifa, and other domestic terrorists. I am also authorizing Full Force, if necessary. Thank you for your attention to this matter!” Trump previously said on Truth Social.
Right on cue, Democrat-run Oregon sued the Trump Administration to stop the deployment of troops.

Armed suspect rams vehicle into federal agents in Chicago: DHS
A woman who previously doxxed federal agents online last week rammed a vehicle into federal law enforcement in Chicago, according to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). The woman was armed with a rifle and the incident occurred while the agents were boxed in by 10 cars.
According to DHS spokesperson Tricia McLaughlin, “This morning, during routine patrolling in Broadview, in the same area of Chicago that law enforcement were assaulted yesterday, our brave law enforcement officers were rammed by vehicles and boxed in by 10 cars. Agents were unable to move their vehicles and exited the car. One of the drivers who rammed the law enforcement vehicle was armed with a semi-automatic weapon. Law enforcement was forced to deploy their weapons and fire defensive shots at an armed US citizen who drove herself to the hospital to get care for wounds.”

Vance calls on ‘deranged’ Jay Jones to drop out of Virginia attorney general race after violent texts emerge
Vice President JD Vance called for Virginia Democratic Attorney General candidate Jay Jones to drop out of the race after threatening text messages from Jones were leaked.
Jones reportedly texted a Virginia Republican in 2022 that he wished to shoot former Virginia House Speaker Dan Gilbert and wished violence on his children.
Vance blasted Jones’s comments on Saturday, calling the Democrat a “very deranged person.”
“The Democrat candidate for AG in Virginia has been fantasizing about murdering his political opponents in private messages,” Vance posted on X. “I’m sure the people hyperventilating about sombrero memes will join me in calling for this very deranged person to drop out of the race.”
