House passes GOP’s SAVE America Act

The House of Representatives on Wednesday night passed the new Republican-led Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) America Act, which requires individuals to present proof of citizenship to register to vote and requires Americans to show ID when voting.

The House passed the legislation, which combined two bills, in a 218-213 vote. The bill saw little support from House Democrats, with Texas Rep. Henry Cuellar being the sole Democrat to join Republicans in passing the legislation.

“It’s just common sense,” House Speaker Mike Johnson told reporters of the legislation. “Americans need an ID to drive, to open a bank account, to buy cold medicine, to file government assistance. So why would voting be any different than that?”

The legislation will now head to the Senate for passage before it can be signed by President Donald Trump.

Trans School Shooter In Canada Is Latest In Growing Epidemic Of Transgender Violence

A mentally ill man cosplaying as a woman reportedly shot and killed six people at a school in British Columbia after murdering his mother and stepbrother, marking yet another instance of transgender violence.

Eighteen-year-old Jesse Van Rootselaar killed his mother and stepbrother on Tuesday before heading to a local school and fatally shooting eight individuals before turning the gun on himself, according to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. Van Rootselaar also wounded more than two dozen in the attack, the Associated Press reported.

Rootselaar was born male but began identifying as a female six years ago, according to the New York Post.

An Instagram account purportedly belonging to Jesse’s mother, Jennifer, appears to show she was a trans activist who posted that “you have any idea how many kids are killing themselves over this kind of hate,” adding “ProtectTransKids.”

Super Bowl Halftime Debacle: Bad Bunny’s Assault on Catholic Values – Podcast

In this explosive podcast episode, a former law enforcement officer turned Catholic evangelist passionately critiques the Super Bowl halftime show featuring Bad Bunny on February 8th. Labeling it a ‘halftime debacle,’ he argues that the performance was a direct attack on decency, modesty, and authentic Catholic values. With lyrics described as ‘pornographic in spirit’ despite catchy beats, Bad Bunny’s display of hypersexualized content and misogyny is seen as a betrayal of Hispanic Catholic culture, which is rooted in faith, family, and the Blessed Virgin Mary.

The episode calls out the NFL and media for promoting immorality and gaslighting the public by labeling such content as ‘wholesome.’ Urging faithful Catholics to stand firm, the host demands accountability from NFL leadership and calls for prayer and action to protect family values. This is a fiery discussion on spiritual warfare, cultural betrayal, and the fight for souls in today’s culture war.

Indiana bishop Kevin Rhoades issues statement rebuking Notre Dame for appointing pro-abortion professor

… [The] appointment [of Susan Ostermann to director of the Liu Institute for Asia and Asian Studies] understandably creates confusion in the public mind as to Notre Dame’s fidelity to its Catholic mission. Many faculty, students, alumni, and benefactors of Notre Dame have reached out to me to express their shock, sadness, confusion, and disappointment. I share their feelings as well as their love for Notre Dame. I can testify from my personal experience and active presence at Notre Dame that the faith is alive there and continues to be nurtured by committed students, faculty, staff, members of the Congregation of Holy Cross, and members of the extended Notre Dame family. …

Because I have the particular responsibility as Bishop of Fort Wayne-South Bend “to promote and assist in the preservation and strengthening” of the Catholic identity of Catholic universities within my diocese (cf. Ex corde ecclesiae #28), I call upon the leadership of Notre Dame to rectify this situation. The appointment of Professor Ostermann is not scheduled to go into effect until July 1, 2026. There is still time to make things right.

Xi Jinping Thought on Demography: How to Lose a Population and Call It Progress – Essay by Massimo Introvigne

In the ever-expanding galaxy of Xi Jinping Thought, which already includes perspectives on ecology, diplomacy, socialism, cybersecurity, literature, and even toilets, it was only a matter of time before demography received its own focus. Now, thanks to an article published on January 20 in the official CCP newspaper “People’s Daily,” we have it: Xi Jinping Thought on Demography. …

To replace the previous idea of demographic abundance, the article introduces the notion of a “comprehensive demographic dividend.” This focus is no longer about quantity; it centers on quality—education, health, and productivity. The aim is to extract more economic value from a smaller population. …

However, this new approach faces many challenges. The authors acknowledge that institutional and systemic barriers still exist. Social security is insufficient, childcare is inconsistent, and health initiatives are lacking. Reform is labeled a “complex systemic project,” which translates to “we are unsure how to manage this.” Cultural views toward marriage and childbearing are also problematic, though the article and the celebrated Xi Jinping Thought on Demography lightly avoid addressing the central issue: the one-child policy.

That longstanding policy, enforced with harsh consequences, fostered an anti-natalist mindset that Party slogans cannot easily change. …

Catholic clergy to surrender passports under new laws in China

China’s state church is enforcing the mandatory surrender of passports for all clergy and religious in the country, ensuring ever tighter control over the practice of religion in the Communist nation.

The regulations enacted in December by the state-approved bodies of the church in China – Chinese Catholic Patriotic Association (CCPA) and its episcopal arm the Bishops’ Conference of the Catholic Church in China (BCCCC) – serve to grant yet further authoritarian control over Catholicism in China. Both of those bodies do not recognize the authority of the Holy See.

Under the rules, clergy and religious must surrender their passports and travel documents – including those for Hong Kong and Macao, and travel permits for Taiwan – to the Chinese officials, who will store all such documents.

The would-be viral moments of (soon-to-be-Blessed) Archbishop Fulton Sheen – Essay by Jack Figge

Back in the 1950s, when somebody said the word viral, they were talking about a disease.

It would be decades before short video clips or edgy tweets could go viral. Which means that media stars living in the before-times never had the chance to go “viral,” or even become a meme.

One such unfortunate soul is Venerable Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen, the popular host of the TV show “Life is Worth Living,” which aired between 1952 and 1957.

Before his widely acclaimed TV show launched, he hosted a radio show beginning in 1930. “The Catholic Hour” drew more than 4 million listeners a week. (Do those numbers make you nervous, Fr. Mike Schmitz?) …

If you ask The Pillar, at least, these would have been Fulton Sheen’s top 5 “viral” moments. …

[One: When Sheen won an Emmy in 1953 the] man, clad in black and purple with a Roman collar, walked out on stage and in his acceptance speech said, “I feel it is time I pay tribute to my four writers — Matthew, Mark, Luke and John.” …
