‘Last opportunity’ to leave: Christians in Gaza face agonizing decision
Israel has warned residents in Gaza to flee or become military targets.
Israeli Minister of Defense Israel Katz said in a post on X at 8:07 a.m. ET, Oct. 1, that the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) had surrounded Gaza City. Anyone leaving southward will be “required to pass through the IDF’s inspection checkpoints,” Katz warned, adding: “This is the last opportunity for Gaza residents who wish to do so to move south and leave Hamas terrorists isolated in Gaza City itself, facing the IDF’s ongoing operations at full force. Those who remain in Gaza will be considered terrorists and terror supporters.”
Gaza City’s Christian clergy and nuns said Aug. 26, as CatholicVote previously reported, that they would stay in compounds of Saint Porphyrius (Orthodox) and Holy Family Church (Catholic) to care for people who can’t flee.

Cardinal Pizzaballa Announces Hospital Project For Gaza In Collaboration With The Italian Episcopal Conference
On Tuesday, September 30, 2025 – His Beatitude Cardinal Pierbattista Pizzaballa, Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem, together with Archbishop Giuseppe Baturi, Secretary General of the Italian Episcopal Conference (CEI), announced a joint project to establish a hospital in Gaza. The initiative, carried out in partnership with the Patriarchate, comes as a concrete response to the worsening health crisis in the enclave.
“There is a very serious health problem, and we want to address it with the Patriarchate: it is a concrete commitment that will mobilize a lot of energy,” Mgr. Baturi affirmed.

Vought cuts $18 billion in New York infrastructure funding over DEI concerns
Trump administration officials announced Wednesday that they are suspending funding for two multibillion-dollar infrastructure developments in New York due to concerns the funds could be tied to “unconstitutional” diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives.
White House Office of Management and Budget Director Russ Vought revealed that $18 billion in funding has been put “on hold” for the Hudson Tunnel Project and Manhattan’s Second Avenue Subway development. The projects are under “administrative review to determine whether any unconstitutional practices are occurring,” according to the Trump administration, which accused Democrats of stalling the review by blocking a congressional budget measure this week designed to keep the government funded.

Four States are Finally Rid of Planned Parenthood
Planned Parenthood officially shut down its last two clinics in Louisiana on Tuesday, leaving the state as the most populous in the country without any of the abortion provider’s locations.
With the closures in Baton Rouge and New Orleans, Louisiana joins Wyoming, North Dakota, and Mississippi as the only states without any Planned Parenthood clinics. The shutdowns follow major federal funding cuts for abortion providers under the Republican-passed One Big Beautiful Bill Act.

Italy votes to bring back public holiday on 4 October for St Francis of Assisi
The Italian parliament has voted to reinstate 4 October as a national public holiday, restoring the day off in honour of Saint Francis of Assisi after almost half a century.
The Italian senate on Wednesday gave final approval to a bill launched by the centre-right Noi Moderati party after it was passed in the lower house last week with 247 votes in favour and just two against.
The bill, backed by the ruling right-wing parties, calls for cultural initiatives dedicated to Italy’s patron saint and the values he embodied: peace, fraternity, inclusion and environmental protection.

Relics of St. Thérèse Begin U.S. Tour at Historic Michigan Catholic Parish Named for the Beloved French Saint
The sacred bones of a much-loved French Carmelite nun and Catholic saint, Thérèse of Lisieux, began a tour in the United States at an historic Michigan parish in suburban Detroit named in her honor.
A reliquary containing some of St. Thérèse’s remains began its U.S. tour at the National Shrine of the Little Flower Basilica in Royal Oak, Michigan. The tour is meant to coincide with the centennial of the saint’s canonization in 1925.
Nicole Scheier was among those who arrived hours ahead of the first opportunity to catch a glimpse of the relics of St. Thérèse of Lisieux.
“St. Thérèse is a saint for everybody. She is relatable. She teaches that sainthood is attainable, doing small things with great love,” Scheier said after pausing before a statue of St. Thérèse outside the National Shrine of The Little Flower Basilica.
