Trump orders oil tanker blockade in Venezuela, designates regime as foreign terrorist organization

President Donald Trump increased pressure on the Venezuelan government Tuesday by designating its regime a “foreign terrorist organization” and ordering a “complete and total” blockade of oil tankers moving in and out of Venezuela.

The actions come after the United States issued new sanctions on the country’s oil industry last week and on members of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro’s family. The U.S. has also been conducting military strikes against boats from the South American country that it alleges are carrying drugs.

Trump claimed the country is using “stolen” oil to finance itself and to fund actions including terrorism, human trafficking, murder and kidnapping.

Police release video timeline of Brown University shooting suspect before and after attack

Police released a video timeline of the Brown University shooting suspect, relying on sparse concrete information to try to get more leads on the suspect.

The FBI released a five-minute video compilation, largely enhanced versions of videos released yesterday, apparently captured from Ring doorbell cameras in residential buildings nearby. The new compilation, however, contained footage from cars and security cameras taken after the shooting that barely spotted the suspect but allowed police to establish a timeline.

Police zoomed in on the suspect in the videos, showing a person with a black hat and mask, a dark green-and-black jacket, and long black pants walking past several houses. After the shooting, he can be spotted walking away from the Brown University campus. The videos taken after the shooting are of poor quality and only show the suspect briefly.

Trump Admin Demands Tim Walz’s Resignation after Another Fraud Discovery

Education Secretary Linda McMahon demanded on Monday that Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz step down over allegations that his administration allowed millions in taxpayer money to be stolen by “ghost students.”

McMahon’s scathing letter, published on X, came after the Education Department reportedly uncovered at least 1,834 fraudulent college applicants in Minnesota received $12.5 million in grants and loans.

Overall, the Trump administration reportedly found that $90 million had been disbursed to alleged scammers in 2024 alone, in addition to $30 million in loans to dead people and over $40 million to companies using AI bots.

These suspected fraudsters, also known as “ghost students,” use stolen identities to obtain the funds.

Confirmed: Joliet’s Bishop Hicks to NYC

Pope Leo XIV is expected to appoint Bishop Ronald Hicks of Joliet as the next Archbishop of New York, The Pillar has confirmed, with an announcement expected as early as Dec. 18. …

Miracle of the liquefaction of blood of St. Januarius is repeated in Naples, Italy

The miracle of the liquefaction of the blood of St. Januarius, patron saint of the Italian city of Naples, occurred again on Tuesday, Dec. 16.

According to the Archdiocese of Naples, the miracle took place after Mass in the Royal Chapel of the Treasure of St. Januarius on the feast of the patronage of St. Januarius.

“At 9:13 a.m. local time, the blood already appeared semi-liquid. At 10:05 a.m., the complete liquefaction was announced,” the archdiocese reported.

“Dec. 16 is the third of three annual celebrations in honor of the martyred saint. This date commemorates the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 1631, when the Neapolitans requested and obtained the miraculous intervention of St. Januarius to prevent the lava from engulfing the city,” he explained.

Here’s Some Good News: The Jubilee of Hope Isn’t Over Yet

… [T]hrough specific observances, including pilgrimages, pious visits to sacred places, works of mercy and penance, and recourse to the sacrament of reconciliation, Catholics can obtain a Jubilee Year plenary indulgence remitting all of the temporal punishments attached to their previous sinful actions. Sometimes we can overlook what an immense grace it is for our souls to be spared, by such an indulgence, from the pains of purgatory that we would otherwise warrant for our past moral misdeeds. …

And if you haven’t done so already, there is still time to obtain this special plenary indulgence, since the Jubilee Year of Hope doesn’t end until Pope Leo closes the Holy Door at St. Peter’s Basilica on Jan. 6, the Solemnity of the Epiphany. There’s no more hopeful and fitting way than that to start the new year.
