The US-Israeli strategy against Iran is working. Essay by Muhanad Seloom

Two weeks into Operation Epic Fury, the dominant narrative has settled into a comfortable groove: The United States and Israel stumbled into a war without a plan. Iran is retaliating across the region. Oil prices are surging, and the world is facing another Middle Eastern quagmire. US senators have called it a blunder. Cable news has tallied the crises. Commentators have warned of a long war.

The chorus is loud and, in some respects, understandable. War is ugly, and this one has imposed real costs on millions of people across the Middle East, including the city I live in.

But this narrative is wrong. Not because the costs are imaginary, but because the critics are measuring the wrong things. They are cataloguing the price of the campaign while ignoring the strategic ledger.

When you look at what has actually happened to Iran’s principal instruments of power – its ballistic missile arsenal, its nuclear infrastructure, its air defences, its navy and its proxy command architecture – the picture is not one of US failure. It is one of systematic, phased degradation of a threat that previous administrations allowed to grow for four decades.

Counterterrorism Chief Resigns Over War, Says Iran ‘Posed No Imminent Threat’

Joe Kent, the director of the National Counterterrorism Center, announced his resignation on Tuesday, saying he “cannot in good conscience” back the Trump administration’s war in Iran.

Kent said on social media that Iran “posed no imminent threat to our nation, and it is clear that we started this war due to pressure from Israel and its powerful American lobby.”

Kent, a former political candidate with connections to right-wing extremists, was confirmed to his post last July on a 52-44 vote.

Secretary of State Rubio denies US seeking to oust Cuba president

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Tuesday denied a report that US officials have urged Cuba to oust its president, Miguel Diaz-Canel.

In a late-night post on X, Rubio said that the article by The New York Times was “fake” and was among media reports that relied on “charlatans and liars claiming to be in the know” as sources.

The newspaper reported Monday that officials under President Donald Trump have asked Cuba to remove the president but have not pushed for a complete toppling of the communist government. …

Rubio earlier Tuesday told reporters that Cuba needed to take more “dramatic” action than new measures to allow overseas Cubans to invest and own businesses in the island, which a day earlier suffered a nationwide blackout.

Will Republicans Fight For The SAVE Act – Or Fold Again? – Commentary by Heather Higgins

Republicans didn’t win the Senate so their leaders could manage expectations. They won it to deliver results. Will Republicans leaders actually deliver? We are about to find out with the SAVE America Act.

The legislation requires proof of citizenship to vote in federal elections. That’s not some fringe idea. It’s the law of the land in nearly every nation in the world – and is one of the most widely supported election reforms in the United States.

A February Harvard CAPS/Harris poll found 85% of voters say only U.S. citizens should vote in American elections. The same survey found 71% support the SAVE America Act itself, 81% support voter ID, and 75% support proof of citizenship requirements. Perhaps most striking: Roughly 70% of Democratic voters support voter ID.

St. Patrick’s Day Parade Excludes Pro-Life Groups

Right to Life groups, excluded from New York City’s Saint Patrick’s Day Parade, rallied in protest today along the parade route, under the leadership of Irish Pro-Life USA.

Pro-Life advocates gathered, peacefully, on Midtown Manhattan sidewalks, holding their banners aloft, to highlight the continued failure of parade organizers to abide by repeated promises to give faithful Catholics, supportive of Church teaching, a presence in the parade.

Eleven years after organizers pledged to permit a pro-life group to march under its own banner, the world’s most famous Saint Patrick’s Day Parade still has not welcomed right to life units to its ranks.

Canadians need permission to bring pepper spray to a gunfight

Canada’s two-tier justice system is rigged in favour of the criminals.

After a string of high-profile home in invasions in the GTA (Greater Toronto Area) in which the homeowners were shot by their assailants, Ontario Premier Doug Ford is going to bat for his constituents: asking Ottawa to approve the use of (checks notes)… pepper spray for self defence.

Currently section 88 of Canada’s Criminal Code  makes it illegal to possess, let alone use pepper spray in any capacity.

“Everyone commits an offence who carries or possesses a weapon … for a purpose dangerous to the public peace or for the purpose of committing an offence.“

Many say we need a “Castle Doctrine” in Canada – which most liberal boomers oppose, probably because they feel it would be too… American. …

Essay on religious truths that cannot be said in ordinary speech

Using images that we know and have experienced concretely in our earthly lives, this is a language meant to point us heavenward. Our challenge is to let it sweep us up and help propel us on that heavenward journey, so that, when we arrive, we can say: “Oh, it’s like this? But of course it is! This makes perfect sense of what we read and heard, but couldn’t yet see or understand.
