Speaker Johnson calls for House members to return to DC to pass Senate-backed funding bill
Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., has called the House back into session to take the final step to end the longest U.S. government shutdown ever.
Votes are expected to get started by 4 p.m. Wednesday, after swearing in Rep.-elect Adelita Grijalva, D-Ariz., acccording to the New York Post.
It is expected to be a strict party line vote.
“House Democrats will strongly oppose any legislation that does not decisively address the Republican healthcare crisis,” House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries told CNN on Tuesday.

Biden-Appointed Judge Poised to Order Mass Release of Illegal Aliens Detained in ICE’s “Operation Blitz” — Thousands Could Be Dumped Back onto Chicago Streets
In yet another blow to immigration enforcement, a federal judge in Illinois is reportedly preparing to order the mass release of thousands of illegal aliens detained during ICE’s “Operation Blitz,” a nationwide crackdown on criminal and repeat immigration violators.
According to ABC7 Chicago, U.S. District Judge Jeffrey Cummings, a Biden appointee, is weighing whether to grant what’s called “equitable relief” that could see federal immigration authorities forced to release thousands of detainees into so-called “alternatives to detention” programs, ankle monitors, smartphone check-ins, and other ineffective tracking methods widely criticized as loopholes by law enforcement officers.
The case stems from the 2022 Castañon Nava settlement, a consent decree that limits ICE agents’ ability to make warrantless arrests in Illinois and several neighboring states.

Some ‘community peacekeepers’ championed by Democrats now charged with murder
Several so-called “community peacekeepers” meant to curb violent crime in major Democrat-led cities are facing murder charges.
Democratic officials championed the peacekeepers as a progressive alternative to policing, whose criminal backgrounds purportedly helped provide a compassionate, “culturally sensitive” approach.
Each of the arrested violence prevention activists had previous encounters with law enforcement, including past murder cases, fueling doubts about the effectiveness of such criminal justice reform programs that critics see as soft on crime.
Kellen McMiller, a member of the Chicago Peacekeepers, was arrested in mid-September for a deadly burglary incident just days after appearing alongside Gov. JB Pritzker (D-IL) at an event applauding the state-funded Peacekeepers program’s violence prevention efforts.
McMiller, a career criminal who was already wanted across four U.S. states, allegedly robbed a Louis Vuitton store at approximately 4:50 a.m. on Sept. 11 as part of an organized crime crew that crashed a car while fleeing the scene, killing an innocent civilian on his way to work.

German bishop breaks ranks over schools document
A German bishop publicly distanced himself Monday from a document on “the diversity of sexual identities” in schools issued by the country’s bishops’ conference.
Bishop Stefan Oster published Nov. 10 a 4,000-word critique of the text “Created, Redeemed, and Loved – Visibility and recognition of the diversity of sexual identities in schools,” arguing that it diverged from traditional Catholic anthropology.
Oster, a member of the Salesians of Don Bosco, was appointed Bishop of Passau, southern Germany, in 2014, at the age of 48. He is known for online evangelization, focused especially on young people. He is one of four German diocesan bishops who openly criticized the country’s controversial “synodal way,” a 2019-2023 initiative that sought sweeping changes to Catholic teaching and practice.
In an evaluation of the new document entitled “Do we still believe what we believe?” Oster criticized its underlying vision of the human person and said it did not reflect his views.
“Even though the cover of the booklet says ‘The German bishops,’ the text does not speak on my behalf,” he wrote.
