Corruption Damages Souls, Tremendously
When those entrusted with our souls betray us, the wound cuts deeper than any other. In this Commentary, I recount the second time in my life a priest publicly broke the sacred seal of confession – this time at the University of Notre Dame – and how the institution not only refused to act, but actively tried to destroy me to protect the predator.
In civil law, when those in authority – police officers, judges, public servants – abuse their power, they often face enhanced penalties because of the trust placed in them. God surely holds an even higher standard for those who commit evil in His name.
“If anyone causes one of these little ones – those who believe in Me – to stumble, it would be better for them to have a large millstone hung around their neck and to be drowned in the depths of the sea.” – Matthew 18:6
This is more than my story – it’s a warning about what happens when institutions designed to protect the innocent instead weaponize their power to protect the guilty.
