49,000 Migrants Storm Spain’s Border in Just 24 Hours
The record influx overwhelmed the tiny Spanish territory of Ceuta, leaving at least 18 dead and prompting Italy to threaten the return of border controls.
Europe’s border crisis erupted overnight as an estimated 49,000 migrants crossed from Morocco into Ceuta, a Spanish territory on the North African coast. At least 18 people have died, while Italy is threatening to bring back border checks.
The mass crossings into Ceuta and Melilla—two Spanish territories that border Morocco—sparked a major diplomatic crisis within hours. Both cities belong to Spain, making their borders with Morocco part of the European Union’s external frontier.
Spain’s interior ministry says around 49,000 people crossed by land and sea in just 24 hours. At least 18 reportedly died in stampedes or while trying to swim around the Tarajal border crossing into Ceuta.
The Spanish government has sent 200 specialist police officers and 60 soldiers to the area. Melilla has not seen an influx on the same scale, but clashes broke out at its Beni Enzar border crossing. Several vehicles were set on fire, while migrants and members of the security forces were injured.
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez promised an “immediate” response, saying his left-wing government was sending help and working with Morocco. Sánchez is expected to visit Ceuta with Interior Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska to meet local officials and police commanders.

‘Freedom Haulers’: cracking down on illegal alien truckers, supporting veterans
President Trump just took a major step to put America’s heroes in the driver’s seat.
Trump announced the ‘Freedom Haulers’ initiative, a new program aimed at helping military veterans obtain commercial driver’s licenses to replace illegal immigrants behind the wheel.
“The radical left wants more jobs for illegal aliens… The Trump administration wants safer roads and more jobs for the American veteran.”
Under the plan, veterans can receive expedited CDL training as DoT cracks down on illegal alien truckers — revoking more than 52,000 licenses that were improperly issued or granted to individuals not proficient in English.

Madison’s [Wisconsin] left-wing ‘autonomous zone’ grows as city keeps streets closed
Activists have erected staffed checkpoints and makeshift barricades around a police-shooting memorial while nearby businesses report lost traffic and officials pursue a “peaceful resolution.”
A left-wing protest encampment at Williamson and South Baldwin streets in Madison, Wisconsin, has grown into a self-described autonomous zone more than a week after a city police officer fatally shot Corey Ruiz at the intersection, leaving two blocks closed to traffic with no announced reopening date.
Some of those maintaining the site call it “CRAZE,” short for the Corey Ruiz Autonomous Zone Encampment. Volunteers have staffed tents at four entrances behind barricades made from vehicles, furniture, wood scraps, and a makeshift spike strip of nails. Tents, couches, food stations, a syringe-exchange sign, and a raised Black Lives Matter fist have appeared inside the occupied area, while activists spray-painted a street sign to rename South Baldwin Street “Corey Street.”
Fond du Lac County District Attorney Eric Toney, a Republican candidate for Wisconsin attorney general, argued that protest rights do not extend to occupying streets, restricting police, and harming neighbors’ livelihoods. He tied the encampment to what he called “dangerous rhetoric” from Democratic gubernatorial candidate and state Rep. Francesca Hong, who labeled Ruiz’s death an “execution.”

News outlet killed story on plagiarism allegations after Cambridge [UK] prof hired law firm
In September 2025, Times Higher Education had a bombshell story in the works: A star sociology professor at the University of Cambridge had allegedly plagiarized parts of his Ph.D. thesis and several journal articles. In one of the articles, the borrowed text appeared in quotes from subjects the professor, Jason Arday, claimed to have interviewed himself.
But after Arday enlisted Carter-Ruck, one of the United Kingdom’s leading defamation law firms, to send Times Higher Education a letter, the publication spiked the story, according to three sources who spoke to Retraction Watch.
One of the sources was David Sanders, a biochemist at Purdue University in Indiana, and a sleuth who contributes to the Times Higher Education on topics related to academic misconduct. He reviewed a 63-page dossier of text comparisons prepared by the publication last year and came back with his own findings. “There is no question that there is extensive plagiarism,” Sanders told us.
The allegations against Arday finally emerged last week following a Substack post from Nathan Cofnas, a philosopher at the University of Ghent in Belgium. Cofnas, who is known for his controversial writings on racial differences, independently identified dozens of passages in Arday’s 2015 dissertation that were taken nearly verbatim from the 2009 dissertation of Paula Zwozdiak-Myers, a reader at Brunel University of London. Cofnas says he learned about the unpublished Times Higher Education story only after he began working on his own piece about Arday. …

Trump Defunds the Left’s Graphic Sex Ed to Support Abstinence and Marriage
Americans have been so busy fighting against radical gender ideology and critical race theory in schools that one of the Left’s favorite ways to undermine parents has fallen under the radar. But the Trump administration hasn’t lost sight of graphic sex education, and parents everywhere should be grateful for it. In a very underreported move, the president’s team went on the offensive this summer, zeroing out millions of taxpayer dollars for controversial “Teen Pregnancy Prevention” programs in favor of solid curriculum that emphasizes abstinence and marriage.
The New York Times picked up on the cuts weeks after the fact in a sob story lamenting how caught off guard local nonprofits had been by HHS’s announcement. But frankly, no one should be surprised. The Trump administration slashed dozens of grants like this in its first term, arguing — rightly — that they only existed to sexualize children, not equip them to make positive and healthy choices. A whopping 53 programs ended up on the chopping block, saving Americans $67 million in what the president’s budget called “radical leftist ideology.” If anything, the administration argued, the Biden- and Obama-era sex ed models have only “normalize[ed] sexual activity for minors.”
Thanks to liberal ideologues masquerading as health experts, activists like Planned Parenthood have had unlimited access to America’s classrooms, knowing if they hook kids on sex, they’re grooming the next generation of abortion customers. It’s been a great down payment on future business — until now. The Office of the Assistant Secretary for Health (OASH) made it clear that the department is under new management where all of this is concerned, posting a list of priorities that should relieve every sane parent in America.

Like many US dioceses, the Archdiocese of Detroit is going through a parish consolidation process.
In the preparation, the archdiocese has posted a detailed set of presentations (one for each parish in the archdiocese) providing the data diocesan leaders are assessing as they make these decisions about the closure or merger of parishes.
The documents provide interesting insights into some hard realities of Catholic life in the Archdiocese of Detroit — much of which is likely similar to the circumstances in other U.S. dioceses, especially in traditional heartlands of American Catholicism.
Detroit’s archdiocesan parish presentations note that “our diocese is growing older, not younger,” pointing to the fact that funerals are now more common than baptisms in the archdiocese.
Detroit’s reputation for post-industrial urban flight might seem to suggest that the archdiocese’s situation is uniquely dire, and connected to total population decline in the region.

Christian persecution concerns rise in Egypt as State Department presses religious freedom
US sends $1.3B annually to Egypt, where Christians make up an estimated 10% of the 120 million population
A series of violent attacks on Egyptian Christians, including the incarceration of a man who converted from Islam to Christianity, prompted the U.S. State Department to urge that religious freedom be respected in the Muslim-majority country of Egypt.
The situation of the Christian minority in Egypt has implications for religious freedom in the northern African nation that receives $1.3 billion in annual funding from the U.S.
Raymond Ibrahim, an expert on Christians in the Muslim world, wrote on the website of the Gatestone Institute, that “Said Mansour Rezk Abdelrazek, a Muslim convert to Christianity, has become one of Egypt’s most prominent religious freedom cases.
“After embracing Christianity in 2016, he endured years of harassment, detention, and abuse. On April 13, prosecutors referred him to a terrorism court, while his lawyers were denied access to the case file. He remains imprisoned, with advocates reporting torture, physical abuse, denial of adequate medical care, and repeated postponements of his trial.”
In another case, the Egyptian Initiative for Personal Rights (EIPR) reported that a mob of Muslims tossed stones at a church in Upper Egypt on July 8, injuring Christians and causing damage to the building and a priest’s car.

“Be wise as serpents and innocent as doves” (Matthew 10:16), Our Lord Jesus Christ commanded the Twelve Apostles.
Perhaps no saint in the history of Christianity has understood this command as deeply as St. Ignatius of Loyola, whose feast we celebrate tomorrow.
Recovering from a cannonball wound in a Basque castle, St. Ignatius decided to become a saint, radically devoting himself to Jesus Christ and the Catholic Church. Though his heart was immovably dedicated to God, St. Ignatius found that the devil could manipulate even his most pure intentions, subtly bringing him to sadness, anxiety, and despair. He found that being wise as a serpent as Christ commanded was a dire necessity to advance in the spiritual life, for only then could a soul understand and resist the temptations of the devil.
Thus, while living in a cave in Manresa in Spain, St. Ignatius wrote the Spiritual Exercises, the greatest guide to spiritual discernment in the history of the Catholic Church. Meant to be “given” over the course of a four-week-long silent retreat, the Exercises are a comprehensive course in determining which practices, thoughts, or beliefs are from God and which are from the devil. They also served as the cornerstone of St. Ignatius’ order, the Society of Jesus, which, by the time he died, was one of the most influential organizations both in the Church and the world.
To many orthodox and faithful Catholics, it is apparent that something has gone horribly wrong with the Society of Jesus in the present day. Perhaps we should look no further than their vocations. The number of men who make their first vows, taken at the conclusion of a two-year novitiate and which typically precede about a decade of further formation before priestly ordination, has plummeted to catastrophically low levels. The USA East province of the Jesuits, which contains eleven universities including powerhouses BC, Fordham, and Georgetown, saw only three men take their first vows last year (and one is already a priest). …
Fr. Martin represents the epitome of the inversion of the modern Society of Jesus, which has used the tremendous power of spiritual discernment taught by the Exercises against the Church. As we will see, Fr. Martin comprehends the Exercises in everything but the ultimate aim of their creation by St. Ignatius, and that he rejects this aim will be manifestly clear once we first understand what the Exercises are.
