Pope set to Canonize First New Saints of his Pontificate

Blessed Carlo Acutis and Pier Giorgio Frassati are set to be canonized together on Sept. 7 – two young men from different eras who led completely different lives, but united in their love for Christ and their ability to impart that love to those whose lives they touched.

Seven more blessed are set to be canonized in October, including martyred Armenian Catholic Archbishop Ignatius Shoukrallah Maloyan, who died in 1915 during the Armenian Genocide in the Ottoman Empire; and Peter To Rot, a lay catechist, who was martyred in 1945 for continuing his apostolate despite the ban imposed by the Japanese.

Israel launches air strikes on Iran’s nuclear program, killing top military officials: ‘If we don’t act now, there will not be another generation’

Israel launched air strikes inside Iran late Thursday in its latest effort to destroy Tehran’s nuclear program – an operation military leaders said they had “no choice” but to carry out.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Operation “Rising Lion” targeted several sites across the Iranian capital to dismantle the country’s nuclear infrastructure, ballistic missile factories and military – in a mission to “roll back” Iran’s threat to Israel’s “very survival.”

Though the extent of damage remains unclear, the attack reportedly killed a high-ranking general and nuclear scientists as explosions boomed across Tehran.

Latest: Appeals court lets Trump keep National Guard in Los Angeles

A federal appeals court has preserved President Donald Trump’s ability to deploy the National Guard to Los Angeles, blocking for at least a few days a judge’s order that found the call-up illegal and unconstitutional.

A three-judge panel of the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals blocked U.S. District Judge Charles Breyer’s order just hours after he issued it, amid an urgent push from the Trump administration to vindicate Trump’s power as commander in chief.

Victor Davis Hanson: The Left is Selling Chaos. America Isn’t Buying

VDH: “While Los Angeles erupts in chaos, California leaders like Gov. Gavin Newsom and Mayor Karen Bass seem more interested in defending violent protesters than upholding federal immigration law. Despite relentless media attacks on Donald Trump—especially on the economy—polls show a 17-point edge for Trump over Democrats when it comes to economic leadership. Why? Because Americans aren’t buying the Left’s hysteria.”

Obama-appointed U.S. District Judge Denise J. Casper issued a preliminary injunction blocking key provisions of President Trump’s executive order aimed at securing federal elections by requiring proof of U.S. citizenship to vote.

The executive order, officially titled Executive Order No. 14248, was intended to plug the gaping holes in America’s voter registration system, which currently allows individuals to vote in federal elections with nothing more than a signed statement affirming their citizenship — no ID, no birth certificate, no passport.

Denmark approves US military bases on Danish soil as Trump eyes Greenland

Denmark’s Parliament on Wednesday approved a bill to allow U.S. military bases on Danish soil, a move that comes as President Donald Trump seeks to take control of the kingdom’s semi-autonomous territory of Greenland.

Critics say the vote ceded Danish sovereignty to the U.S. The legislation widens a previous military agreement, made in 2023 with the Biden administration, where U.S. troops had broad access to Danish air bases in the Scandinavian country.

Three Years After Dobbs, Americans are Becoming More Pro-Life on Abortion

A new Gallup poll has revealed that the percentage of surveyed Americans who say they are pro-life has risen two points since last year to 43%, a number that is consistent with past survey results over the last two decades.

Experts say the numbers suggest that the efforts by the Democratic Party, pro-abortion activists, and the mainstream media to sway the American electorate towards widespread acceptance of abortion in the wake of the Supreme Court’s Dobbs decision have been largely unsuccessful.

Can American pope bring US-style fundraising to fix Vatican finances?

As a bishop in Peru, Robert Prevost was often on the lookout for used cars that he could buy cheap and fix up himself for use in parishes around his diocese. With cars that were really broken down, he’d watch YouTube videos to learn how to fix them.

That kind of make-do-with-less, fix-it-yourself mentality could serve Pope Leo XIV well as he addresses one of the greatest challenges facing him as pope: The Holy See’s chronic, 50 million to 60 million euro ($57-68 million) structural deficit, 1 billion euro ($1.14 billion) pension fund shortfall and declining donations that together pose something of an existential threat to the central government of the 1.4-billion strong Catholic Church.

Today is the Feast of St. Anthony of Padua

St. Anthony of Padua is invoked as the patron saint of lost things due to a popular story from his life. A novice borrowed Anthony’s psalter (a book of Psalms) without permission and later lost it. Anthony prayed for its return, and the novice was compelled—some say by a vision or divine urging—to return the book.

This incident, combined with Anthony’s reputation for miracles and his preaching on repentance, led to his association with recovering lost items. By the 14th century, devotees began invoking him for lost objects, a tradition that spread widely, especially among Catholics.
