‘National Disgrace’: Largest Federal Workers’ Union Rips Into Democrats, Demands Government Reopening

With the government shutdown nearing the one-month mark, the nation’s largest union representing federal workers, a close Democratic ally, is demanding that Democratic senators join Republicans in passing a House-approved resolution to reopen the government.

“Both political parties have made their point, and still there is no clear end in sight,” American Federation of Government Employees president Everett Kelley said in a statement. “It’s time to pass a clean continuing resolution and end this shutdown today. No half measures, and no gamesmanship.”

The union, which is closely affiliated with the Democratic Party and represents more than 800,000 government workers, is “urging Democrats to abandon their current position and join Republicans in supporting a stopgap solution,” NBC reported.

JD Vance Confirms U.S. Troops Will Be Paid During Schumer Shutdown

Vice President JD Vance confirmed that U.S. military personnel will be paid on Friday during the ongoing Democrat government shutdown, while warning that they are “not going to be able to pay everybody.”

When talking to reporters on Tuesday after a lunch with Senate Republicans, Vance expressed that the Trump administration believes they “can continue to pay the troops at least for now,” according to the Hill. Vance also noted that they are dealing with the issue of funding for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) expiring at the end of the month.

“Will the troops get paid on Friday? Yes, we believe that we can continue to pay the troops on Friday,” Vance said. “Unfortunately, we’re not going to be able to pay everybody, because we’ve been handed a very bad hand by the Democrats.”

Vance’s comments come as billionaire Timothy Mellon, a Trump ally, was identified as being the person who donated $130 million to the government in order for U.S. military troops to be paid during the shutdown.

Catholic bishops urge end to shutdown, fund SNAP

In the midst of the ongoing federal government shutdown, Archbishop Timothy P. Broglio, president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops issued a plea for lawmakers and the Administration to work in a bipartisan way to ensure funding of lifesaving programs and an end to the government shutdown. Archbishop Broglio cited the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), a government program that aids needy families, as an example of an impacted program.

“As this government shutdown continues, the U.S. bishops are deeply alarmed that essential programs that support the common good, such as SNAP, may be interrupted. This would be catastrophic for families and individuals who rely on SNAP to put food on the table and places the burdens of this shutdown most heavily on the poor and vulnerable of our nation, who are the least able to move forward.

RNC Election Integrity Machine Revs Up In Virginia And New Jersey

With one week to go before Virginia’s high-stakes election, a county elections regulator is accused of refusing to appoint Republican election officers in violation of state law.

The complaint alleges that the Campbell County Electoral Board and its director, Kelly L. Martin, have failed to fill Republican election officer positions in several precincts. According to the lawsuit, filed by the Campbell County Republican Committee, the board has more than 40 qualified Republicans from which to choose, but “Defendants have intentionally refused to comply with the law.”

“Defendants have been given ample notice of their obligations under Virginia law, they have received several requests to respect the rights of the Plaintiffs, and they have ample time to bring each precinct into compliance,” the complaint, filed in Campbell County Circuit Court, charges.

Obama Scolded Voters for Not Supporting the Black Woman in 2024, Now He’s Telling Voters to Ignore the Black Woman Candidate in Virginia and Support the White One

Anyone who follows politics will recall that during the 2024 election, former President Obama campaigned for Kamala Harris and scolded voters, particularly black men, for not showing enough support for Kamala Harris.

Now a year later, Obama is campaigning for the white woman candidate, Abigail Spanberger, in the Virginia governor race. Winsome Earle-Sears, the Republican in the race, is a black woman and does not have the support of Obama.

Isn’t it funny how that works? It’s almost as if what really matters to Obama is party ID, and not the race of the candidate – unless it’s politically useful.

Oversight Committee Releases Report on the Biden Autopen Presidency

Today, the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform released a staff report titled “The Biden Autopen Presidency: Decline, Delusion, and Deception in the White House.”

The report exposes how President Joe Biden’s top advisors, political operatives, and personal physician concealed the President’s mental and physical decline from the American people. The findings reveal that as President Biden’s condition deteriorated, his aides exercised presidential authority and facilitated executive actions without his direct authorization, including misusing the autopen and failing to properly document decision-making processes.

Following the findings of its investigation, the Chairman James Comer (R-Ky.) sent a letter to the U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi requesting the U.S. Department of Justice conduct a comprehensive review of all executive actions taken during the Biden presidency and scrutinize key Biden aides—Dr. Kevin O’Connor, Annie Tomasini, and Anthony Bernal—who pleaded the Fifth Amendment during the investigation.

Plight of Persecuted Christians Is ‘Urgent and Needs to Be Addressed,’ Hungarian Relief Official Says

On Monday, Pope Leo XIV met with Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán. Details of what the two leaders spoke about were not made public, but one issue of particular concern to Orbán is the plight of persecuted Christians and endangered Christian communities around the world.

Orbán’s administration created a dedicated governmental unit to focus on that issue in 2016; and in 2018, the unit expanded to include Hungary Helps, an agency that functions as a nonprofit organization that supports aid efforts and development projects in various communities in the Middle East, Asia and Africa.

Hungary Helps is currently under the direction of Tristan Azbej, Hungary’s state secretary for persecuted Christians.

Trump Administration Provides Life-Saving Humanitarian Assistance to Druze, Christian, and Bedouin Communities in Southern Syria

As part of efforts to restore stability to Southern Syria, the United States is providing humanitarian assistance to Suwayda, where Druze, Christian, and Bedouin communities have faced violence, the destruction of their homes and have lost their livelihoods.

This assistance will support life-saving needs of approximately 60,000 people through targeted provision of food, water, and hygiene items, as well as the rehabilitation of houses and water systems for when people can safely return home.

While hostilities have largely subsided, the security situation remains unpredictable. This has resulted in limited movement of supplies that has affected civilian safety and the ability of the approximately 187,000 displaced individuals to return to their homes. …

Bill Gates calls for a new outlook on climate change

Bill Gates is pushing back on what he calls a “doomsday outlook” when it comes to fighting climate change.

The Microsoft co-founder published a memo in his blog Monday that called for a greater focus on preventing suffering and improving the lives of people in developing nations, saying the current narrative on climate change is driving policymakers to “focus too much on near-term emissions goals.”

“Although climate change will have serious consequences—particularly for people in the poorest countries—it will not lead to humanity’s demise,” Gates wrote. “People will be able to live and thrive in most places on Earth for the foreseeable future.”

Category 5 Hurricane Melissa brings flooding and catastrophic winds to Jamaica

Heavy floodwaters swept across southwestern Jamaica, winds tore roofs off buildings and boulders tumbled onto roads Tuesday as Hurricane Melissa pummeled the Caribbean island as a catastrophic Category 5 storm, one of the strongest Atlantic hurricanes on record.

Landslides, fallen trees and numerous power outages were reported as Melissa hit with 185 mph (295 kph) winds near New Hope, with officials cautioning that the cleanup and damage assessment could be slow.

“There is no infrastructure in the region that can withstand a Category 5,” Prime Minister Andrew Holness said. “The question now is the speed of recovery. That’s the challenge” …

“Roofs were flying off,” he said. “We are hoping and praying that the situation will ease so that some attempt can be made to get to those persons.”

Hurricane spares Kingston, Jamaica, from worst of its wrath so far, religious brother says

The director of apostolates for a Jamaica-based religious community serving the poor in Kingston said Oct. 28 that the Category-5 Hurricane Melissa seems to be sparing Kingston the worst of its wrath.

But he added that the storm was not yet finished, and much remained unknown about the historic hurricane’s impact in the region.

“In this hurricane we did quite a bit of preparation and honestly we are scared and we don’t know what to expect,” said Brother Nowel Barroga Rebamonte, a 22-year-member of the Missionaries of the Poor, who spoke with OSV News by phone Oct. 28.
