Catholic Intellectuals Lead Nationalist Revival Against Liberal Order

A quiet revolution has been reshaping American conservatism over the past decade, and faithful Catholics need to understand what it means for our nation’s future. While political commentators debate the mechanics of this transformation, the deeper question remains: how does this shift serve God’s plan for America and the protection of our Constitutional republic?

The intellectual architect behind much of this change is Israeli-American philosopher Yoram Hazony, whose influence extends far beyond academic circles. His 2018 work “The Virtue of Nationalism” didn’t just win praise from Trump allies—it provided the philosophical foundation for a movement that has fundamentally reoriented how conservatives think about faith, family and nation.

What Hazony identified, and what President Trump instinctively championed, represents a return to principles that Catholics have long understood: the nation-state exists not merely to protect individual liberties, but to promote the common good and create conditions where families can flourish and faith can thrive.

The Liberal Order’s Assault on Christian Civilization

For too long, American conservatives accepted the premise that individual liberty and equality should be the ultimate arbiters of policy. This liberal framework, dominant since 1990, created what Hazony calls a “new world order” that prioritized globalist institutions over national sovereignty and reduced governance to protecting abstract individual rights rather than promoting human flourishing.

The results speak for themselves. We witnessed decades of cultural decay, the erosion of religious liberty, attacks on traditional marriage and family, and the subordination of American interests to international bodies hostile to Christian values. The liberal order didn’t just fail to protect our faith – it actively undermined it.

Catholic teaching has never accepted the rigid separation of Church and state that secular liberals demand. As Pope St. Pius X taught, such separation is “unjust and harmful” because it prevents civil power from aiding the Church’s mission to guide souls toward eternal salvation. The liberal order’s insistence on value-neutral governance created a moral vacuum that secular progressives eagerly filled with their anti-Christian agenda.

Nationalism as Christian Restoration

The nationalist turn that Trump championed aligns remarkably well with Catholic social teaching about the proper role of government. When Hazony argues that democracy requires government to be responsive to “a particular nation,” he echoes the Church’s understanding that political authority exists to serve the common good of a specific people, rooted in their history, culture and moral traditions.

This isn’t the aggressive nationalism that liberals caricature. It’s the recognition that God established nations as natural communities where human beings can pursue their temporal and eternal destinies. The three pillars of Trump’s politics – immigration enforcement, trade policies that protect American workers, and non-interventionist foreign policy – all flow from prioritizing the welfare of the American people over abstract global commitments.

For Catholics, this represents an opportunity to restore Christian principles to governance. A nation that takes its own identity seriously is far more likely to defend its founding principles, including the acknowledgment of God’s authority that appears throughout our founding documents. A nation that protects its borders and culture can better preserve the Christian heritage that shaped Western civilization.

The Constitutional Framework Supports Faith

Critics argue that Christian nationalism threatens constitutional principles, but they misunderstand both our Constitution and Catholic teaching. The First Amendment protects religious freedom – it doesn’t mandate the secular liberal interpretation that has dominated recent decades. Conservative constitutional scholars correctly emphasize that the natural law tradition and the original constitutional context welcomed religion’s role in public life.

The Second Vatican Council’s Dignitatis Humanae affirms religious freedom while upholding the Church’s indispensable role in ordering society toward God’s ultimate end. There is no contradiction between defending the Constitution and insisting that Christian moral principles inform our laws and policies.

When nationalist conservatives defend religious liberty, oppose abortion, and protect traditional marriage, they’re not imposing theocracy – they’re allowing natural law and divine revelation to guide policy in areas where secular liberalism has created moral chaos.

Building the Intellectual Infrastructure

Perhaps most encouraging is the intellectual foundation being built to support this transformation. Thinkers like R.R. Reno, Oren Cass, and others are developing sophisticated arguments for why nationalism serves human flourishing better than globalist liberalism. Hazony’s National Conservatism Conference has become a crucial gathering point for leaders committed to this vision.

This intellectual work matters because ideas have consequences. The liberal order succeeded for decades partly because it had prestigious institutions, influential thinkers and compelling narratives. Now a new generation of conservative intellectuals is providing the philosophical framework for a post-liberal order that can better protect faith, family and freedom.

The Republican Party’s transformation under Trump’s influence appears durable. Leaders like JD Vance, Ron DeSantis and Marco Rubio represent a new generation of conservatives who understand that defending America means defending the Christian principles that made America great. Unlike the old guard conservatives who accepted liberal premises while arguing for different policies, these leaders reject the liberal framework entirely.

Our Mission in the Nationalist Moment

As faithful Catholics, we must recognize this moment as providential. After decades of retreat, conservatives finally have leadership willing to challenge the secular liberal order directly. The nationalist turn creates space for Christians to reclaim their rightful role in public life and advance policies that serve the common good rather than abstract individual rights.

This doesn’t mean uncritical support for any political movement, but it does mean recognizing when God provides opportunities to advance His kingdom through political means. The alignment between nationalist conservatism and Catholic social teaching on issues like immigration, economics and foreign policy is too significant to ignore.

We must support leaders who understand that America’s greatness flows from its Christian heritage and that defending the nation means defending the moral order that sustains it. We must engage in the intellectual work of developing authentically Catholic responses to contemporary challenges. Most importantly, we must participate actively in politics while keeping our ultimate loyalty fixed on the eternal city.

Reasons for Hope and Action

The transformation of American conservatism over the past decade demonstrates that dramatic political change remains possible. Cultural elites may dominate universities and media, but they cannot control the hearts of ordinary Americans who still recognize truth when they hear it.

The intellectual infrastructure supporting nationalist conservatism continues growing stronger. Young Catholics increasingly reject the false choice between faith and political engagement that characterized earlier generations. Political leaders who understand the connection between Christian civilization and constitutional government are gaining influence.

Most importantly, this moment calls faithful Catholics to action. We must vote for candidates who will defend religious liberty and traditional values. We must support organizations building the intellectual case for Christian engagement in politics. We must raise our children to understand that loving God includes loving the earthly communities where He has placed us.

The nationalist conservative moment represents more than political realignment – it offers the possibility of cultural restoration. By God’s grace and our faithful action, we can help build a post-liberal order that serves human flourishing and advances His kingdom on earth.
