Trump Signs Funding Bill to End Shutdown
President Donald Trump on Monday night signed the funding bill that officially ends the nation’s longest government shutdown.
The move concludes a 43-day standoff that strained federal operations and disrupted services nationwide.
Surrounded by Republican lawmakers in the Oval Office … Trump called it an “honor” to reopen the government.
“We went through this short-term disaster with the Democrats because they thought it would be good politically. And it’s an honor now to sign this incredible bill and get our country working again,” Trump said.

For the last several months, Democrats have been trying furiously to tie Donald Trump to Jeffrey Epstein. Aside from the fact that this media campaign is obviously not organic, it’s utterly bizarre and disingenuous. Democrats simply don’t care about ties to Epstein, and never have. They only care that these allegations can be used to possibly harm Trump.
For instance, the evidence tying Bill Clinton to Jeffrey Epstein is far stronger than that involving Donald Trump, and Clinton spoke in primetime at the Democratic National Convention last year and is hardly persona non grata. Similarly, LinkedIn’s billionaire founder Reid Hoffman is a Democrat megadonor who was actively involved in funding the lawfare efforts against Trump and other deeply unethical efforts to help Democrats — including overt attempts to deploy Russian disinformation tactics in Senate races.

‘We have got to say something’ – Bishops make special immigration statement as sign of ‘unity’
Bishops gave a standing ovation Wednesday, after they voted overwhelmingly to approve a special statement on immigration during the fall plenary assembly of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops. …
The statement aimed to express “ties of communion and compassion” with immigrants amid a contemporary “climate of fear and anxiety.”
“We are saddened by the state of contemporary debate and the vilification of immigrants,” the bishops’ statement said.
“We are concerned about the conditions in detention centers and the lack of access to pastoral care. … We are grieved when we meet parents who fear being detained when taking their children to school and when we try to console family members who have already been separated from their loved ones.”

Bishop Seitz lauds immigration bill to create legal protections
Legislation that would provide protections for people lacking legal immigration status has won praise from Bishop Mark J. Seitz of El Paso, Texas, who has served as chair of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops’ Committee on Migration.
The bill (HR 4393), which would not lay out a direct path to citizenship, would give people who lack legal status the chance to earn it through labor and financial penalties if they lack a criminal record. It would apply to people who entered the United States before 2021.
The measure would authorize funding for border security and create centers for asylum seekers during consideration of their case. It would require asylum cases to be completed within 60 days.

Survey finds US Catholics trust local parishes and pastors more than dioceses
A recently released survey found that U.S. Catholics have high levels of trust in their local parishes and pastors, but most do not trust that their dioceses and bishops are open about financial operations or issues facing the Church.
The Leadership Roundtable said its survey, conducted July 10-12 among more than 3,000 U.S. Catholics, found that “Catholics today are engaged, and show strong and deep trust, particularly in their local parishes and leaders.”
“But their trust and engagement is tenuous, and they are hoping to see continued progress in building transparency and accountability from their Church,” the Leadership Roundtable said of the report.

US Bishops to Consecrate Nation to Sacred Heart of Jesus – Consecration will accompany the country’s 250th anniversary
The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) approved the consecration of the nation to the Sacred Heart of Jesus in 2026 to accompany the country’s 250th anniversary.
At the USCCB Fall Plenary Assembly in Baltimore, bishops voted “to entrust our nation to the love and care of the Sacred Heart of Jesus.” Devoting the nation is an opportunity “to remind everyone of our task to serve our nation by perfecting the temporal order with the spirit of the Gospel as taught by the Second Vatican Council,” Bishop Kevin Rhoades of Fort Wayne-South Bend, Indiana, said.
“One hundred years ago, in 1925, in his encyclical instituting the feast of Christ the King, Pope Pius XI, drawing on the teaching of Pope Leo XIII, referred to the pious custom of consecrating oneself, families, and even nations to the Sacred Heart of Jesus as a way to recognize the kinship of Christ,” said Bishop Rhoades, who serves on an advisory board for President Donald Trump’s Religious Liberty Commission.

Mother Frances Cabrini: The unsinkable saint who missed the Titanic
In April 1912, Mother Frances Cabrini was in Italy with her sisters. Her plans were to visit her foundations in France, Spain, and England before sailing back to the United States in mid-April to continue work in New York City. Her sisters in England were eagerly awaiting this visit from their 62-year-old founder and superior. To help make her journey back to the U.S. more comfortable, they bought her a ticket and booked passage on a new ocean liner, the RMS Titanic.
Although an intrepid traveler who would eventually make 24 transatlantic crossings to establish her foundation, hospitals, and orphanages, Mother Cabrini was not a fan of ocean voyages since she had almost drowned as a child.
While the sisters in England waited, word got to Mother Cabrini that there was trouble at the Columbus Hospital she had established in New York. It was overflowing and there was urgent business to settle connected to a new expansion. She could not wait. She had to get back to raise desperately needed money to proceed with the project. So she changed her plans and left early, sailing from Naples, disappointing the sisters in England who had booked her passage on the Titanic.
