A Pope for the AI Era

In choosing the name Leo XIV, our new Holy Father has set himself an urgent task: to diagnose the ills of our age and offer wisdom, as Pope Leo XIII did for his own time and beyond. ...

What is the value of such Leonine wisdom in the age of artificial intelligence? In many ways, the challenge of AI is an intensification of the great question of our time: What does it mean to be human?

In a sit-down interview with The New York Times’ Ross Douthat, U.S. Vice President JD Vance opened up about how his Catholic faith informs his political views and how he squares his religious beliefs with his hard-line views on immigration enforcement. …

During the interview, Vance discussed how his faith and Catholic social teaching contribute to his views on governance. Yet he also explained why he believes an American vice president cannot simply “do everything the Holy Father tells me to do” because of his obligations to serve the interests of the American people.

Trump confronts South African president with video on treatment of White farmers

President Donald Trump confronted South African President Cyril Ramaphosa at the White House on Wednesday with a video allegedly showing grave treatment of White farmers.

Trump has claimed that White Afrikaner South African farmers are being slaughtered and forced off their land. The Afrikaners are descendants of mostly Dutch settlers who first arrived in South Africa in 1652.

A portion of the footage aired at the White House showed white crosses lined up alongside both sides of a road [representing dead farmers].

'Why Wouldn't You Arrest That Man?': Trump Questions South Africa's President During Meeting

In his Oval Office meeting with South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, President Trump questioned Ramaphosa about why he hasn't arrested a politician [Julius Malema] who had called for death to the white farmers.

'Trump made history today'

“It is really something to witness the meeting between Presidents Trump and Ramaphosa because for several decades the farm murders have been swept under the carpet,” says Ernst Roets, an Afrikaner writer.

The “big moment,” he says was when Trump asked for a video of the Julius Malema calling for the death of Boers and presenting evidence of atrocities experienced by the white farmers.

Roets says he, along with other Afrikaners, are thanking Trump for raising awareness of this issue.

Essay by Gavin Ashenden: Where is the tender Catholic conscience to speak up for Lucy Connolly

The case of Lucy Connolly has caused widespread alarm and comment. [Tuesday] her appeal was refused and the response has been public outrage – to an extent.

The facts of her case need little rehearsing. The 42-year-old mother was imprisoned for 31 months for making an intemperate Tweet.

The mass stabbing last summer at Southport tore at the fabric of our fragile social glue. The harsh, immediate and disproportionate punishments of protestors have raised more than the accusation of two-tier policing or two-tier justice. ...

“How can it be right for Lucy to have been condemned to spend more than two-and-a-half years in jail for a single tweet when members of grooming gangs who plead guilty to the sexual exploitation of children get lower sentences?”

Pizzaballa said that “1700 years ago, at Nicaea, in a religious, cultural and political context that was no less problematic than today, the Church had the courage and audacity to finally give the faith a form that was common to all, but at the same time clear ...

Essay: The Curé d’Ars to Confront Our Lost Culture

The Catholic Church needs a hero now. Nothing less will do. Pope Leo must lead a new crusade to search out the lost lambs and bring them back, according to Kevin Wells. In his new book, Coached by the Curé: Lessons in Shepherding with St. John Vianney, the author brings this truth to the attention of priests and laity alike. Quoting Vianney, Wells writes,

"If a priest is determined not to lose his soul, as soon as any disorder arises in the parish, he must trample underfoot all human considerations, as well as the fear of the contempt and the hatred of his people. He must not allow anything to bar his way in the discharge of duty, even if he was certain of being murdered on coming down from the pulpit."

The Eucharist: Respect the Real Presence

Join Fr. Brendan Kilcoyne as he discusses the importance of receiving Communion with reverence and reacts to an Italian archbishop's criticism of his parishioners' receiving Holy Eucharist on the tongue.

I feel that Communion in the hand has actually done huge harm to Eucharistic devotion, to faith and to practice. I feel that it vulgarized ... our manner of interacting with the physical presence of the Lord," he says.

'The May Magnificat,' a poem by Gerard Manley Hopkins

May is Mary’s month, and I

Muse at that and wonder why:

Her feasts follow reason,

Dated due to season –

Candlemas, Lady day;

But the Lady Month, May

Why fasten that upon her,

With a feasting in her honor …
