U.S. strikes Iran after Iranian drone downs Apache helicopter near Hormuz Strait
U.S. forces launched strikes against Iran June 9 after President Donald Trump said Iranian forces shot down a U.S. Army Apache helicopter near the Strait of Hormuz.
U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) said an AH-64 Apache attack helicopter went down while patrolling regional waters near Oman June 8. The military said the pilot and gunner were rescued within about two hours and were not injured.
Capt. Tim Hawkins, a CENTCOM spokesman, said a U.S. Navy unmanned surface vessel helped locate the crew before they were hoisted aboard a helicopter. The military said the incident remained under investigation. …
Hours later, CENTCOM announced that U.S. forces had begun what it described as self-defense strikes against Iran.
“U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) forces began launching self-defense strikes against Iran at 5 p.m. ET today at the Commander in Chief’s direction, in response to yesterday’s downing of a U.S. Army Apache helicopter,” CENTCOM stated. “The mission is a proportional response to unjustified Iranian aggression.”

Vance refers Gov. Tim Walz and Minnesota attorney general to DOJ for fraud investigation
The Justice Department opened a separate investigation this year into the Democratic governor over allegations he helped impede immigration enforcement.
Vice President JD Vance announced Monday that he is referring Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz and state Attorney General Keith Ellison — both Democrats — to the Justice Department for a criminal fraud investigation involving social services programs.
“Minnesota state officials are not above the law, and if they facilitated fraud, lied under oath about what they knew, or harassed and intimated whistleblowers, they must face justice,” Vance wrote on X, adding that his referral was prompted by a letter and a report from the Republican-led House Oversight Committee.
The committee’s report, published Monday, alleged that Minnesota state officials, including Walz and Ellison, were “aware of widespread taxpayer fraud in federally funded social programs for years” and did not take steps to stop it.
Teddy Tschann, a spokesperson for Walz, pointed to the governor’s testimony to the Oversight Committee in March and added, “This committee has proven time and time again to be nothing more than a joke.”
In a statement to NBC News, Ellison said the allegations were “unfounded” and a “political stunt.”

Scientists unethically experiment on the unborn to improve gene editing techniques, bioethicist says
Genetic researchers are experimenting on unborn children in trials that could have been done on animal embryos, according to one bioethicist.
Genetic researchers are increasing the accuracy of gene editing through experiments on unborn babies that could have been done on animals, one bioethicist says.
At Columbia University, researchers have now edited the DNA of human embryos with “unprecedented accuracy,” according to a recent report by the New York Times.
Dieter Egli, a professor of developmental cell biology in the Department of Pediatrics at Columbia, led the research, using a technique called base editing to replace individual genetic letters in sequences of DNA, according to the report. …
The developing technology comes with its own ethical implications, as it could be used to help cure disease-causing mutations in the early stages of life, but it could also be used in a eugenic way to select traits of unborn children.
Father Tadeusz Pacholczyk, a neuroscientist and senior ethicist at the National Catholic Bioethics Center, drew attention to ethical concerns with these experiments.
“Trying to make genetic modifications in a more efficient manner than had been previously achieved is precisely the kind of experiment that should have been carried out in animal embryos, not human embryos,” he told EWTN News.

Homes Burned as Belfast Erupts After Knife Attack
The arrest of a Sudanese asylum seeker over a brutal street attack triggered a night of unrest, arson, and anti-immigration protests across Northern Ireland.
Violence erupted across Northern Ireland on Tuesday night after a Sudanese asylum seeker was charged with attempted murder following a brutal knife attack in north Belfast that sparked widespread public outrage.
The 30-year-old suspect, who is due to appear before Belfast Magistrates’ Court, was also charged with possessing a bladed article in a public place and making threats to kill. The victim, a local man in his 40s, suffered serious injuries to his face, neck, and back and remains in hospital.
The case attracted national attention after footage circulated online appearing to show the attacker repeatedly striking the victim while he was on the ground. Police later confirmed that the suspect had arrived in Ireland in 2023 before travelling to Northern Ireland, where he claimed asylum and was subsequently granted leave to remain in the United Kingdom until 2028.
The revelation reignited debate over Britain’s asylum system and border controls, particularly the so-called “Irish route,” under which migrants can enter the Republic of Ireland and later travel into Northern Ireland without routine border checks.
